Jia De Guzman keeps focus on task at hand

Despite the sudden changes in the schedule, the Creamline Cool Smashers were still able to dominate the Cignal HD Spikers last Monday.

Creamline was originally pitted against guest team Kobe Shinwa Women’s University but the varsity team pulled out at the last minute after one of its players tested positive for COVID-19.

This forced the league to tap the Philippine women’s national volleyball team as a replacement – which also begged off after 12 of its players, all from National University, failed to get the green light from their team manager.

The Rebisco-backed squad eventually faced the HD Spikers and took a quick 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 win to up their semifinals card to 3-0.

"Sila coach Sherwin (Meneses) naman told us na kahit sinong itapat sa amin, we're physically and mentally prepared saka once we found out na there was a switch in opponent, everyone made it a point to scout and study on their own kaagad," said Creamline playmaker Jia De Guzman.

"Nakalaban na rin naman namin before yung Cignal so it was just a matter of controlling our basic errors, also like coach mentioned yung celebrating every point, and everything that we weren't able to execute properly in the last game. Thankfully, we were able to do it today,” added De Guzman as the Cool Smashers were coming off a come-from-behind five-set win over PLDT.

While the team would have loved to go up against the Philippines’ best, Morado said that the team is too focused on its title campaign in the Invitationals to dwell on things that are out of their control.

"Sometimes, every other day na yung game, there's not much time to dwell on things like that so whoever is our next opponent, we just do our best to prepare and recover physically and mentally," said the former National team star, who finished with 26 excellent sets in the win.

Creamline, who already entered the finals after PLDT's loss to KingWhale on Tuesday, will take on the Taipei-based club on Friday at 4:00 PM.
