De Brito, renowned for his role as the head coach of the Philippine women’s national volleyball team, had joined the Chargers during their inaugural campaign last year, leaving an indelible mark on the team.
“Coach Jorge Souza de Brito has submitted his resignation as the head coach of the Akari Chargers, effective December 15, 2023,” stated the official release from Akari.
The team's statement extended gratitude, expressing, “Akari management has accepted Coach Jorge's resignation and offers our sincerest appreciation, thanking him for his time and service during the four conferences he has served as the head tactician of this young, promising team.”
“We wish Coach Jorge the best of luck in his future endeavors.”
De Brito's tenure saw the Chargers achieve back-to-back eighth-place finishes in the 2022 Reinforced Conference and the 2023 First All-Filipino Conference. However, the team faced a setback, landing in 10th place during the recent Invitational Conference.
A highlight of De Brito's coaching stint with Akari was witnessed in the Second All-Filipino Conference, where he led the team to a commendable 5-6 record. This included a historic achievement – the team's first-ever back-to-back victories in franchise history – securing a notable seventh-place finish.
Despite these accomplishments, the Chargers fell short of qualifying for the playoffs in all four conferences, leaving fans and management contemplating the team's future trajectory.
As the news of De Brito's departure settles in, Akari is yet to reveal the successor to fill the void left by the seasoned coach. The team has assured fans that more announcements regarding the direction and strategy for the future will be disclosed in the coming days.
