Akari diffuses Nxled to stay unblemished

Akari showcased impressive resilience and depth as it rallied from a sluggish start to overcome Nxled, 21-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-18, and stretch its amazing run to seven in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at the Philsports Arena on Thursday night.

The Chargers, coming off a hard-fought five-set victory against Galeries Tower, initially struggled but found their rhythm in the second set and dominated the remaining frames, staying perfect with seven straight wins.

Despite the victory, Akari head coach Taka Minowa voiced concerns about the team’s tendency to start slow.

“All the games seem to start the same way. We need to fix our slow starts if we’re aiming for the championship,” said Minowa.

American wing spiker Oly Okaro was the standout performer, contributing 30 points with 28 attacks, an ace, and a block, while Ivy Lacsina added 19 points.

Grethcel Soltones supported both offensively and defensively with nine points and 13 excellent digs, while Camille Victoria also contributed seven points.

Team captain and playmaker Michelle Cobb delivered a memorable performance, earning top honors with nine points and 18 excellent sets.

An emotional Cobb reflected on her performance, saying, “I was emotional because our team has faced many challenges. Despite everything, we’re still here, supported by our teammates and coaches.”

Cobb’s leadership was crucial for Akari, who played without Kamille Cal due to a minor injury.

The team aims to continue its franchise-record streak when it faces Farm Fresh on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.

Nxled, on the other hand, bowed out of quarterfinals contention with a 1-6 record. American middle blocker Meegan Hart led the Chameleons with 16 points, while Chiara Permentilla added 11 points. Nxled will look to rebound when it tangles Cignal on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
