Akari's undefeated start only the beginning: Oly Okaro demands more

As the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference progresses, Akari is basking in the glow of an impressive 6-0 start, marking a franchise-best streak. Yet, despite their perfect record, team star Oly Okaro insists that the journey has only just begun. For her, the path to success is paved with continued determination and a relentless drive towards the championship.

In a thrilling display of prowess, Okaro led Akari to a hard-fought victory over the Highrisers, securing a 23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 18-16 win. Her performance was nothing short of extraordinary, as she delivered a staggering 32 points to propel her team to the top. But for Okaro, this triumph is merely a stepping stone towards a larger goal.

“Let’s remember that just because we’re in first place, that doesn’t mean anything because other teams will be hungry to beat us,” Okaro said.

“So, let’s not get complacent, let’s not get too relaxed.”

Okaro’s words are a reminder that success in volleyball is not just about winning matches; it’s about maintaining an unyielding focus throughout the conference. The Chargers, despite their franchise-high six-game winning streak, face the constant threat of complacency—a pitfall that Okaro is determined to avoid.

“There were moments where we got too relaxed, so it’s something we need to work on moving forward because every team is going to fight really hard,” she added.

Next up for Akari are clashes against sister team NXLED (1-4) and Farm Fresh (2-3), as they aim to close the elimination phase with an unblemished record. Okaro’s experience and insight are vital as the Chargers navigate the latter part of the phase.

“When you’re the top team, everyone wants to beat you badly, so they bring everything they have because they feel like they have nothing to lose,” Okaro explained.

To combat the pitfalls of complacency, Okaro advocates for maintaining composure, particularly during high-stress situations. Her ability to remain calm has been a cornerstone of Akari’s success, especially in their dramatic reverse sweeps against Petro Gazz and Choco Mucho in Pool B play.

“I just try to stay calm and remind everybody to stay calm. It’s okay—there’s no need to get nervous, just play your game,” she said, embodying the calm yet fierce determination that drives her.

As Akari continues their campaign, Okaro’s leadership will be instrumental in steering the team towards their ultimate goal—a championship. Her message is clear: stay focused, stay driven, and above all, stay hungry.
