Alba's block seals Akari's 5-set escape over Choco Mucho

In a showdown where composure was tested, resolve pushed to the limit and not an inch was yielded without a fight, Akari summoned just enough poise and power to outlast Choco Mucho in a gripping five-set Saturday night thriller, 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 19-25, 16-14, and keep its semifinal bid alive in the PVL All-Filipino Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig.

With both teams desperately chasing a spot in the Final Four in the fiercely contested Siklab Series, every point carried enormous weight. Neither side blinked, neither gave ground, and the match ultimately boiled down to nerve, execution and a spectacular exchange of blocks in a tension-filled fifth set.

It was the Chargers who held their ground when it mattered most, surviving a furious Choco Mucho fightback before Eli Soyud delivered the go-ahead point with an off-the-block hit on her second attempt, and setter Mars Alba came up with the biggest defensive play of the night, stuffing Sisi Rondina-Rosales' match-extending attack with a right-hand block that sent the ball bouncing into an unguarded Zone 1.

The emphatic rejection ignited a wild Akari celebration, sealing a two-hour, 19-minute victory that was anything but comfortable.

In fact, the Chargers had nearly let it slip away after building a seemingly commanding 14-11 lead on an Ivy Lacsina kill. But the Flying Titans, refusing to surrender their own semis aspirations, mounted one last desperate charge, with Kat Tolentino delivering two clutch hits before Choco Mucho saved three match points, include on a Lacsina wild hit on her second attempt.

That late 3-0 surge drew the teams level at 14, sending the pro-Choco Mucho crowd into a frenzy and threatening to turn the match on its head.

But Akari emerged from the huddle with its composure intact. Soyud silenced the roaring crowd with her crucial hit-out, then Alba rose to the occasion, taking on the usually unflappable Rondina-Rosales in a one-on-one confrontation on the right side. His perfectly timed rejection sent the ball crashing into Zone 1, ending the contest and preserving the Chargers' hard-earned victory.

The final set was a showcase of defensive intensity, with both teams trading resounding rejections in a sequence of fierce net battles. There were nine blocks in the decider alone, underscoring how much the outcome hinged on which side could hold its ground at the net.

The fifth set, the ninth match in the Series that went the distance, featured four deadlocks, beginning with Soyud blocking Eya Laure for the opening point before Laure returned the favor on Soyud in the next play.

Akari, however, managed to seize control, opening a 5-2 cushion on a Ced Domingo ace and leaning on Lacsina's power attacks to keep the Flying Titans at bay. Lacsina's thunderous kill appeared to deliver the finishing blow at 14-11, only for Choco Mucho to summon one final rally before the Chargers finally closed the door.

The victory did not assure Akari of a Final Four berth, but it improved its record to 3-3, allowing the Chargers to catch the Flying Titans at joint sixth and remain firmly in contention in the crowded race to the post-elimination round.

Akari faces a formidable challenge against unbeaten Nxled on Thursday before wrapping up its elims campaign against winless ZUS Coffee on Nov. 17.

For Choco Mucho, the defeat was another painful setback following its four-set loss to Nxled last Tuesday. The Flying Titans, also now at 3-3, must regroup quickly for Thursday's crucial encounter with Creamline before facing PLDT on Nov. 19.

Soyud once again spearheaded Akari's attack with 17 points, capping a determined bounce-back performance after the Chargers absorbed a stinging five-set defeat to erstwhile winless Galeries Tower last Tuesday.

“Nag-set ako ng example sa teammates ko para from there makita nila na gustong-gusto talagang naming manalo,” said Soyud, whose leadership and timely production proved vital in a match that demanded every ounce of the Chargers' fighting spirit.

And against a Choco Mucho side equally unwilling to yield, Akari needed every bit of that resolve.

Lacsina also finished with 17 points, while Fifi Sharma contributed eight, Domingo added seven, and Grethcel Soltones and Faith Nisperos chipped in six apiece as the Chargers edged Choco Mucho, 61-60, in attacks, highlighting the closely fought nature of the contest.

Akari, however, held the upper hand at the net, coming through with 13 blocks against the Flying Titans’ eight. The Chargers also overcame 32 points surrendered on errors by capitalizing on Choco Mucho’s miscues, converting them into 29 turnover points.

Eya Laure and Tolentino led Choco Mucho with 16 and 15 points, respectively, while Rondina-Rosales added eight. Maddie Madayag and Jewel Encarnacion also finished with eight points apiece.

In the end, it was not simply the Chargers' firepower that carried the day, but their ability to withstand the pressure, survive the late collapse and deliver when the match came down to one final block.

Alba supplied that decisive wall, turning away Rondina-Rosales and sending Akari soaring back into the semifinal hunt.
