In a volleyball landscape she has long helped define, Alyssa Valdez has already ticked nearly every box an athlete could dream of.
From her dominant years with Ateneo in the UAAP to a trophy-laden run with Creamline in the PVL, the 32-year-old outside hitter has built a résumé filled with championships, records, and accolades that have shaped an era of Philippine volleyball.
At this stage of her career, there is little left to validate in the eyes of the public.
Yet for Valdez, the pursuit has never been about external validation. The challenge, as she sees it, is far more personal.
“At this point of my career, I want to prove — not to other people, but to myself — that I’m here because I still want it and I still have it,” said the former three-time league MVP after the Cool Smashers clinched their 11th PVL championship.
Rather than fading into a supporting role quietly, Valdez has embraced a different kind of impact in recent seasons—one that blends leadership, timely production, and steadiness when Creamline needs it most.
That value was on full display during a crucial stretch of the conference, when injuries to Jema Galanza and Bernadeth Pons forced the team into a reshuffle at a time when their semifinal hopes were hanging in the balance.
Valdez answered the call.
In their final preliminary assignment against the Super Spikers, she turned back the clock with 22 points alongside 13 excellent digs and 13 excellent receptions, helping the Cool Smashers secure a vital path to the next phase.
Even in defeat in the qualifying round against the same opponent, she kept her level high with 18 points, 19 digs, and 20 receptions. She then delivered another all-around performance in the play-in against Akari, tallying 20 points, 19 digs, and eight receptions to punch Creamline’s ticket to the semifinals.
Across that decisive three-game span, Valdez produced averages that nearly resembled a statistical triple-double: 20.0 points, 17.0 digs, and 13.6 excellent receptions—a stretch that proved pivotal in steering Creamline back into contention.
Once the team regained full strength heading into the semifinals, she gradually stepped back, allowing Bernadeth Pons and Jema Galanza to take center stage again. But by then, her job in stabilizing the campaign had already been done.
Beyond the numbers, Valdez said the journey this conference carried a deeper meaning for the team as a whole.
“I just really wanna enjoy playing volleyball. I’m just very, very happy to all my teammates, sa lahat ng nagse-step up, at sa bawat isa ng Cool Smashers,” said Valdez.
Reflecting on Creamline’s campaign, she also pointed to the maturity that allowed the group to weather adversity and adjust collectively.
“I think yung Creamline ngayon, I would say seasoned talaga. Kasi, throughout the conference, ang daming struggles — as in. Pero because we’re all veterans din, I think napag-usapan talaga nang mabuti kung ano yung mga kailangang gawin. And sobrang very mature, from the coaches down to our staff — talagang nag-contribute.”
By the time the semifinals arrived, the narrative had already shifted back toward Creamline’s younger stars. But Valdez’s fingerprints were all over the run that got them there.
Her resurgence in the middle of adversity did not just fill a gap—it steadied an entire campaign.
And in many ways, that continues to define Alyssa Valdez: not just a decorated star, but a constant force in the moments when Creamline needs balance the most.
