Angel Canino credits 'the' Jia De Guzman for smooth transition to opposite spiker

In a thrilling start to her era as an opposite spiker, Angel Canino's debut for Alas Pilipinas in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women showcased her impressive versatility and talent.

The UAAP Season 85 rookie MVP made a seamless transition from her natural position as an outside spiker, leading her team to a dramatic comeback victory against Australia.

Canino's performance was nothing short of spectacular, as she tallied a game-high 17 points, including 15 from attacks, one block, and one ace. These points were crucial in securing the Philippines' victory with set scores of 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, and 25-21. The match, held at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila, captivated 4,945 enthusiastic fans on Thursday evening.

Despite her dominant display earning her the Player of the Game title, the 20-year-old spiker humbly attributed her success to her teammates.

"I'm very happy lang kasi syempre I'm not expecting really sa self ko and hindi ko naman po magagawa lahat nang ito kung wala po yung mga teammates ko," Canino remarked.

Having recently recovered from a freak arm injury in early April, her gratitude extended to her coaches for their unwavering support.

“Credits din sa mga teammates ko po and credits din sa mga coaches kasi they guide me talaga inside and outside the court so sobrang thankful ako sa kanila kasi nandyan sila para sa akin.”

A significant aspect of Canino's stellar debut was her on-court chemistry with setter Jia De Guzman. Despite being first-time teammates, their synergy was evident throughout the match.

"Actually, ano talaga, natutuwa ako and sobrang nakakakilig din talaga sa feeling na pinagse-setan ka ni 'the' Jia De Guzman," said Canino, the main gunner for De La Salle.

“Sobrang happy lang din kasi, syempre na-experience ko yung first game with her and natuwa ako kasi parang pinupush nya talagang magka-connection sa amin isa-isa.”
