When Ara Galang stepped onto the court for the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference, her striking new look was impossible to ignore.
Gone was her signature spiky hairstyle, replaced by a vibrant red 'semi-kalbo' cut that turned heads and sparked conversations.
The bold choice was more than just a fashion statement; it was a nod to her inspiration, Sakuragi Hanamichi from the classic manga series Slam Dunk.
“Nung nagstart ako sa Chery, kasi sakto nagnumber 10 ako, ‘eh plano ko na rin mag-red hair. Inano ko na rin naman parang syempre Sakuragi ‘yun diba,” Galang explained after leading the Chery Tiggo Crossovers to a decisive 25-16, 25-20, 25-23 victory over the Nxled Chameleons.
The win not only boosted Chery Tiggo's standing but also showcased Galang’s versatility and commitment on the court.
The resemblance to Sakuragi is more than cosmetic for the 29-year-old wing spiker.
Just as the manga character struggled and fought to earn his place with Shohoku High School, Galang has had her own journey of proving herself with Chery Tiggo.
After a modest performance in their opener against Farm Fresh, where she contributed just four points, Galang made a strong comeback with 11 points, including seven attacks, four blocks, and 11 digs in the recent match.
“Si Sakuragi kasi alam mo yung palaban din kasi siya… Parang nagstart din siya ng wala, parang paangat. Hanggang sa nabuild niya yung confidence niya,” Galang said.
Galang's new role with Chery Tiggo is especially crucial given the team’s current challenges.
With key players Jen Nierva and Eya Laure away due to Alas Pilipinas duties and EJ Laure sidelined with a shoulder injury, Galang’s leadership and performance become even more vital.
“Kailangan panindigan ko yung binigay sakin na responsibility and binigay na role. Syempre kung ano yung pinagtatrabahuhan ko, ‘yon naman din yung mailalabas,” she said.
Galang’s transformation is more than just a new hairstyle; it represents a renewed determination and a readiness to lead.
As she channels her inner Sakuragi and rises to the occasion for Chery Tiggo, fans and teammates alike are eager to see how this new chapter unfolds.
