As ZUS Coffee wraps up their 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference campaign with an 0-8 record, the Thunderbelles are taking a moment to celebrate their standout Japanese import, Asaka Tamaru, whose dedication and performance shone brightly despite the team’s winless season.
Tamaru, the Japanese reinforcement, faced significant hurdles during the conference, not least of which was a language barrier that made communication with her local teammates a challenge. Yet, her commitment and skill were undeniable, and she proved to be a pillar of strength for the Thunderbelles throughout the tournament.
“Sobra kasi si Asaka sa amin kahit na medyo mahirap sa amin yung communication, talagang tinatry niya yung best niya makipag-communicate sa amin,” said ZUS Coffee captain Cloanne Mondoñedo. “Kita naman natin yung basics niya talagang maganda. Natuturuan niya rin kami.”
Unlike many imports who can converse easily in English or have the aid of a translator, Tamaru relied on a translator app on her cellphone to bridge the communication gap. This did little to diminish her impact on the court, where she finished with 134 total points, ranking 10th in the league. Her proficiency wasn’t limited to scoring alone; Tamaru also ranked in the top 10 for reception, demonstrating her all-around skills.
Tamaru first captured Filipino fans' attention in 2023 when she led Kurashiki Ablaze to victory in the Invitational Conference. Her performance this season, although marred by her team’s struggles, highlighted her resilience and capability.
Despite the Thunderbelles’ challenging season, Mondoñedo expressed satisfaction with their progress and identified areas for growth. “Maturity talaga sa game kasi nandyan naman dumidikit naman kaya lang talaga sa huli talagang kinakapos kami lagi,” she noted.
Looking ahead, ZUS Coffee is poised for a boost as they prepare for the All-Filipino Conference later in 2024. The addition of Thea Gagate, the historic first overall pick of the PVL inaugural draft, is expected to bring a significant impact to the team’s lineup.
