Brooke Van Sickle shines bright with back-to-back MVP honors

Petro Gazz star Brooke Van Sickle remained the very picture of consistency, hoisting her second consecutive Most Valuable Player award in the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference on Saturday night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

Van Sickle, now the proud recipient of back-to-back MVP awards in the All-Filipino Conference, was nothing short of extraordinary this season. The Fil-Hawaiian outside hitter consistently led the Angels both offensively and defensively, orchestrating their spectacular journey to the Finals with grace and power.

She ranked third in scoring with an impressive total of 349 points built on 296 attacks, 30 kill blocks, and a league-leading 23 aces. Her precision at the net also earned her the second spot in spiking, boasting an outstanding 36.86% success rate.

But it was at the service line where she truly shined, topping the rankings with an average of 0.38 aces per set.

Aside from her scoring brilliance, Van Sickle’s exceptional floor defense was on full display throughout the conference. She secured third place in receiving with a stellar 35.37 efficiency rate and ranked sixth in digging, averaging 2.89 digs per set.

PLDT ace Savannah Davison and Creamline star Bernadeth Pons were named the Best Outside Spikers of the tournament, while Farm Fresh top gunner Trisha Tubu nabbed the Best Opposite Spiker award.

This is Davison’s first citation since joining the league in 2023. The Fil-Canadian spiker was the second-best scorer of the tournament with 355 points and the league’s top spiker with a success rate of 38.62%.

Davison also placed ninth in blocking with an average of 0.52 per set and eighth in receiving with a 28.60% efficiency rate.

This is also Pons’ first Best Outside Spiker award. She was ranked as the fourth-best spiker with a 34.58% success rate and the 12th-best scorer with a total of 195 points.

On the other hand, Tubu is now a two-time recipient of the Best Opposite Spiker award. The Foxies star ranked sixth in scoring with 227 points and third in spiking with a 36.05% success rate.

Another Cool Smasher in Bea De Leon was also part of the All-Premier Team, as she was named one of the Best Middle Blockers of the conference alongside ZUS Coffee top rookie Thea Gagate.

De Leon stood tall in this conference, anchoring Creamline’s net defense by topping the blocking category with 0.77 per set. On the other hand, Gagate led the league in total blocks with 48—just two ahead of De Leon, ranked second in blocking with a 0.74 per set average, and 14th in scoring with 190—the best among middle blockers.

Kyle Negrito rounded out the Cool Smashers on the list of awardees after claiming her third Best Setter award, while Thang Ponce of Choco Mucho also bagged her third Best Libero plum.

Negrito ranked first in the setting department with 4.98 sets per set and fifth in serving with 0.25 per set, while Ponce led in receiving with a 47.83% efficiency rate and placed fourth in digging with 3.31 per set.

Cignal rookie Ishie Lalongisip, who was asked to take on a bigger role in leading the HD Spikers' scoring due to a couple of sudden departures midway through the conference, won a well-deserved Rookie of the Conference award.

The seventh pick of the 2024 PVL Draft was the third-best scorer among rookies in this conference, ranking 28th overall with a total of 134 points.
