Ces Molina embraces weight of expectations as newly crowned MVP

In the world of Philippine volleyball, Ces Molina's name has become synonymous with consistency and perseverance.

Leading the Cignal HD Spikers to a bronze finish in the prestigious 2023 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Invitational Conference, Molina's performance was nothing short of outstanding.

However, it was not just the medal that shone in her accolades; she also secured her first-ever MVP award, a testament to her dedication and skill.

Hailing from the province of Nueva Ecija, the 28-year-old athlete embraced her role as the main weapon for the HD Spikers. In their fierce battle against F2 Logistics in the fight for third place, Molina proved her mettle by delivering an impressive performance, tallying 19 points on 17 attacks, one block, and an ace.

The newly-crowned MVP humbly expressed her gratitude for the prestigious award, acknowledging the added pressure it brings.

"Of course, it's a significant inspiration and, of course, added pressure. Everyone will expect more from me now, and they will always look for results," said Molina, reflecting on the expectations that come with the MVP title.

However, Molina's perspective on the award was refreshingly grounded. Despite the recognition, she remained focused on continuous improvement and staying level-headed.

"I need to remind myself not to let this award get to my head. In my 13 years of playing, this is my first MVP in the major leagues I've competed in. I'll just keep working hard until the next conference," she added with determination.

Her success could not have been possible without the unwavering trust and guidance of Cignal's head coach, Shaq Delos Santos. Molina praised her coach's belief in her talent, which played a pivotal role in her and the team's achievements during the Invitationals.

But she was quick to acknowledge that individual accolades are not achieved in isolation. Molina was genuinely thankful for her teammates, recognizing their crucial contributions to her MVP campaign.

Emotionally touched by her award, she exclaimed, "I had no idea I was the MVP! Oh my God. I really thought I was just an outside spiker earlier. I'm super happy and grateful because I couldn't have done this without the help and perseverance of my teammates and coaches."

Molina's path to the bronze medal was far from easy, with the HD Spikers having to face formidable opponents like F2 Logistics, Choco Mucho, and Petro Gazz in the elimination rounds. Additionally, they had to overcome the challenges posed by two foreign teams, Japan's Kurashiki and Vietnam's Kinh Bac, in the semifinals.

Despite missing out on the championship, Molina expressed immense pride in Cignal's tenacity and hard-fought journey that culminated in a podium finish.

"It was really tough for us in this conference because, first and foremost, we had foreign teams competing, and we gave our best in this conference," she shared, looking back on the Invitational. "We fell short, but we still made it to the podium. Our team is overjoyed, and we'll cherish this victory before returning to work. Our focus will be different in the next conference."

With her two-time Best Outside Hitter awards and now an MVP to her name, Ces Molina's story serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes.

Her journey from the NCAA to a league MVP exemplifies the power of perseverance, hard work, and the unwavering support of her teammates and coaches.
