In the bustling world of Philippine volleyball, where the spotlight often shines on stars from prestigious collegiate leagues, there exists a tale of perseverance and triumph that embodies the essence of sports.
It's the story of Cherry Nunag, a name that was once whispered in the shadows but now resonates with the thunderous applause of a nation.
Nunag's journey began not on the hallowed courts of UAAP or NCAA, but amidst the green fields of De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.
In those humble beginnings, she nurtured a dream that seemed distant, a dream of wearing the colors of her country's national team.
Fast forward to a rainy Saturday evening at the iconic Rizal Memorial Coliseum, and Nunag found herself standing tall at 5-foot-10, ready to make her mark.
As the starting middle blocker for Alas Pilipinas against Iran, she showed nerves of steel and determination in her heart.
It was a moment of validation for the Choco Mucho blocker, a testament to the countless hours of hard work and sacrifice she poured into her craft.
Reflecting on her journey, Nunag humbly acknowledges the challenges she overcame, navigating a path less traveled by volleyball aspirants.
“Hindi siya madali knowing na hindi ka naging part ng NCAA and UAAP hindi madaling bumuo ng pangalan or something. Yung ibang tao nagugulat pa saan galing itong tao na ito so for me happy ako sa lahat ng pinagdaanan ko mula umpisa, step by step and kung saan man ako, nandidito ako at kung saan pa pupunta yung journey at yung career ko," she said.
With four points to her name in the match against Iran, Nunag acknowledges her performance but remains hungry for more.
“Medyo kulang pa actually. Ang dami ko pa rin gustong ilabas," she asserts, her eyes gleaming with determination.
Grateful for the opportunities afforded to her by her coach, Nunag embraces her role as a key player in the team's quest for glory.
With the relentless pace of the tournament demanding constant readiness, she stands poised to deliver whenever called upon.
