Choco Mucho launches VTV Cup campaign with victory over Kansai

Choco Mucho's triumphant journey in the 2023 VTV Cup commenced with a resounding victory over Japan's Kansai University.

The intense showdown unfolded at Lao Cai Gymnasium in Vietnam, and the Flying Titans demonstrated their prowess by securing a compelling score of 25-17, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22 against their spirited opponents on Saturday.

The match witnessed a gripping narrative, as Choco Mucho encountered a minor setback during the third set when they found themselves trailing by a six-point margin. This downturn, however, served as a catalyst for the team's unwavering determination.

Igniting a revival, the Flying Titans embarked on a remarkable comeback, propelling themselves to an impressive 16-10 lead. Despite their spirited resurgence, the Japanese squad displayed commendable resilience, managing to narrow the deficit to a mere one point, thus altering the scoreboard to read 22-23.

It was at this pivotal juncture that Caitlin Viray and Maddie Madayag emerged as the saviors of Choco Mucho. Their composed and calculated performances were exactly what the team needed.

These two remarkable athletes orchestrated a sequence of consecutive scores, ultimately clinching the victory for their team.

The collaborative contributions of key players such as Caitlin Viray, Des Cheng, Cherry Nunag, and Deanna Wong played a significant role in shaping Choco Mucho's path to a win.

In the initial set, the Flying Titans held a slight 10-8 advantage. This slender lead was skillfully extended to a more comfortable 17-11 cushion.

The set culminated with a decisive score of 25-17, firmly establishing Choco Mucho's ascendancy.

As the match progressed, Kansai University exhibited remarkable adaptability.

Swiftly recalibrating their approach, the Japanese team surged ahead, amassing a commanding 13-9 lead in the second set.

However, the dynamic duo of Sisi Rondina and Caitlin Viray rose to the occasion, spearheading Choco Mucho's spirited resurgence. The score was soon leveled at 13-all, marking a pivotal turning point in the set.

A defining moment arose when Kat Tolentino successfully utilized a challenge, confirming that her attack had been deflected by an opponent's touch. This pivotal maneuver propelled the Filipino team to set point, the scoreboard reflecting a tantalizing 24-21.

Despite a valiant attempt by the Japanese side to narrow the gap, Tolentino's decisive crosscourt hit quelled Kansai's resurgence, securing the set for Choco Mucho.

The ebbs and flows of the intense match took an unfortunate turn for the Flying Titans in the third set.

Struggling to regain their attacking finesse, Choco Mucho encountered difficulty and could only muster a total of 10 points from spikes. This struggle allowed Kansai University to regain their momentum, ultimately triumphing with a commendable score of 25-19 in the third set.

Nonetheless, this setback did not undermine Choco Mucho's tenacity or diminish their overall performance throughout the contest.

Anticipation and excitement now mount as Choco Mucho readies itself for its forthcoming encounter against Vietnam 1. Scheduled for tomorrow at 8 p.m. (Manila time), this upcoming match promises another exhilarating chapter in the team's journey within the 2023 VTV Cup.
