Cignal trips Army, ends up 6th

Cignal ended its drab campaign with a 29-27, 25-19, 25-16 victory over Army in the 2023 PVL All-Filipino Conference as the HD Spikers finished sixth with a 3-5 record after finishing third behind champion Creamline and Petro Gazz last year.

Chai Troncoso saved her best for last, unloading a game-high 16 points on 13 attacks, while Ces Molina scored 15 points on 12 attacks, two aces and a block for the HD Spikers, who dropped the Choco Mucho Flying Titans to seventh with a 2-6 mark.

The Lady Troopers wound up last with no win to show in eight matches.

Rachel Anne Daquis added 12 points, including four blocks, and produced 12 excellent digs.

“I’m happy and syempre very thankful kay Lord dahil alam namin na medyo mabigat yung pinagdaanan nung team,” said Cignal head coach Shaq delos Santos.

Cignal barely survived the Lady Troopers in the opening frame but settled down and stamped their class in the next two.

The HD Spikers dominated all categories, tallying 48 attack points, 11 blocks, and six aces against the Lady Troopers’ 34, 6 and 2, respectively.

“Yung last game namin nakuha namin ng straight sets so sarap pala ng pakiramdam ulit ng ganun na nakuha namin yung game na ‘to. Magiging inspiration namin ‘to. Additional inspiration ‘to para sa amin ‘pag pasok ng Invitationals,” added delos Santos.

Gel Cayuna tossed 12 excellent sets while Jheck Dionela made eight excellent digs and eight excellent receptions.

Royse Tubino fired 14 points while Nene Bautista and Jeanette Villareal had seven points apiece for Army, which dropped a total of 21 consecutive games since the Invitational Conference last year.
