As the 2023 Premier Volleyball League Second All-Filipino Conference entered its pivotal phase, the Cignal HD Spikers encountered a situation they had diligently prepared for during their rigorous training sessions.
Anticipating the demanding semifinals, where only the top four teams would progress, the HD Spikers invested significant time practicing high-pressure five-set matches.
Their thorough preparation faced its ultimate test on Thursday when they found themselves in a challenging two-sets-to-none deficit against the formidable Choco Mucho.
Undaunted, the HD Spikers rallied their strength, orchestrating a remarkable turnaround to secure victory with a scoreline of 18-25, 23-25, 25-14, 25-19, 15-10.
This not only brought them to the brink of entering the Finals but also ended Choco Mucho's impressive 10-game winning streak.
Team captain Ces Molina, the MVP of the previous conference, highlighted the importance of their preparation after the intense two-hour, 25-minute battle.
"This is what we prepared for; these five-set matches. We dedicated long hours to training for situations like this," Molina revealed.
The team's motivation, combined with their collective exhaustion throughout the conference, fueled the HD Spikers' determination.
Molina led the charge with 23 points, showcasing her all-around skills with 20 attacks, two blocks, and an ace, accompanied by 19 digs and 16 excellent receptions.
Vanie Gandler contributed 17 points, Jovelyn Gonzaga added 16, while Ria Meneses and Gel Cayuna each contributed nine points.
Molina and Gonzaga's leadership played a pivotal role in steadying the team after falling behind 0-2.
"Personally, I never felt that we were going to lose. With two sets down, I thought, okay, there's one more set, two more sets, three more sets, and I could see the eagerness of my teammates to win the game," Molina shared confidently.
Now, with the mighty Flying Titans facing elimination, the HD Spikers stand on the verge of securing a coveted Finals spot. Game 2 promises to be another intense showdown, scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The Cignal HD Spikers are ready to capitalize on their momentum and secure a place in the championship round after completely missing the postseason during the First AFC.
