Creamline’s championship poise once again rose above the pressure, as the battle-tested Cool Smashers leaned on their experience in crunch time to dismantle the upstart Farm Fresh Foxies, 25-23, 14-25, 25-23, 25-19, on Thursday and storm into another Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference finals.
In a match that hinted at a tight, nerve-wracking duel, Creamline’s composure in key moments – honed by years of title runs – proved decisive, while the Foxies’ inexperience on the big stage ultimately surfaced when it mattered most.
Bracing for a grind-out battle in the final semifinal playdate at the FilOil Centre, the Cool Smashers instead rediscovered the dominant form that has delivered them 10 championships, finishing off Farm Fresh’s breakthrough finals bid in emphatic fashion.
But Creamline had to dig deep in Set 3, escaping a tense stretch that ultimately became the match’s turning point. From there, the Cool Smashers seized control, carrying that momentum into a blistering 5-1 start in Set 4. Their poise and endgame discipline quickly pried the frame open.
Farm Fresh threatened to rally several times, trimming the deficit to a single point on two occasions, the last at 15-16 after Ces Molina rejected Bea de Leon at the net. But Creamline responded with the calm of a seasoned contender, stringing together timely hits to restore order. Protecting a 21-18 edge, Jia de Guzman shifted to her middle, and Pangs Panaga delivered back-to-back quick attacks that underscored the Cool Smashers’ trust in their system.
Royse Tubino briefly kept the Foxies alive with a powerful finish to a long rally, pulling them within three, 19-22. But that proved to be their final push. As the pressure peaked, Farm Fresh’s inexperience in high-stakes moments surfaced – attacks went astray, and composure wavered.
Trisha Tubu, who had been clutch throughout their near-finals run, misfired on a crosscourt attempt to hand Creamline match point. In a last-ditch effort, the lefty swung again, only to send the ball wide.
That sequence sealed both Farm Fresh’s fate and Creamline’s march to a 15th Finals appearance – this time against Cignal, which is set to make its first championship stint in the All-Filipino Conference.
“Sobrang hirap ng season na ‘to, pero pinaghirapan talaga naming sa training. Lahat ng hard work namin lumabas sa game na ‘to, (It was such a tough season, but we really worked hard in training. All of that hard work showed in this game),” said Panaga, who clinched the Best Player of Game honors with a 13 points, built on seven attacks and six kill blocks.
More importantly, her imposing presence at the net anchored Creamline’s control, particularly during their decisive fourth-set surge, where her timing and discipline in the middle disrupted Farm Fresh’s rhythm and reinforced the Cool Smashers’ command of the two-hour, nine-minute match.
Tots Carlos delivered big-time, finishing with 15 points, all coming off attacks, while Jema Galanza matched Panaga’s output. Bernadette Pons added 12 points, and the Cool Smashers drew a combined 17-point contribution from De Leon, De Guzman and Michele Gumabao.
Tubu led Farm Fresh with 21 points and got solid support from veterans Ces Molina, Royse Tubino, and Mylene Paat, who added 19, 12, and 11 points, respectively. However, when push came to shove, the seasoned Cool Smashers simply executed better in managing endgame pressure.
Farm Fresh edged Creamline in attacks, 61-57, but the Cool Smashers controlled the net with 12 blocks – four more than the Foxies. De Guzman also outshone counterpart Alohi Robins-Hardy in setting, 26-19, while Carlos also stood out defensively with 14 excellent digs, and Pons turned in a superb all-around performance with 17 digs and the same number of receptions.
Despite the setback, Farm Fresh remained on track in building its identity, with the Foxies now shifting focus to a bronze-medal finish against the PLDT High Speed Hitters.
