Creamline's triumph in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League 2nd All-Filipino Conference was nothing short of spectacular – a flawless 15-0 sweep that underscored the team's indomitable spirit.
What made this victory even more remarkable was the absence of key players Jia De Guzman and Ced Domingo, who had ventured abroad to pursue their volleyball careers.
The resounding success of the Cool Smashers in clinching their 2nd AFC crown was a testament to the strength of the system that had been the backbone of Creamline's greatness over the years.
When doubts and questions loomed large following the departure of De Guzman and Domingo, head coach Sherwin Meneses remained unshaken in his belief in the team.
"I can't understand what they mean when they say our bench is not deep, especially in the last conference and the previous ones. It's the same roster with just two additions," remarked Meneses, emphasizing that Mafe Galanza and Bea Bonafe were the only new faces on the team.
While acknowledging that De Guzman and Domingo had added depth to the roster, Meneses credited the resilience of the "others" who stepped up to fill the void left by the setter-middle duo. Kyle Negrito took on the role of Creamline's main setter, while Risa Sato and Jeanette Panaga held their ground as formidable middle blockers.
The unsung heroes on the bench, including Pau Soriano, Rose Vargas, and Lorie Bernardo, proved pivotal, showcasing their prowess whenever called upon.
Meneses highlighted the depth of the team, noting, "Last conference was indeed deeper because it's the same lineup plus two. Our point is, even with some players gone, others step up because every player's ultimate goal is to win. That's what's beautiful about Creamline."
Meneses, now a four-time PVL champion, surpassed the achievements of former coach Tai Bundit, who had clinched three titles with the team.
Reflecting on the team's journey, Meneses expressed his satisfaction with the competitive spirit during every training session, emphasizing the joy he finds in such a challenging yet rewarding environment.
"Every training session is highly competitive. Even when they're just playing among themselves, it's like they're in a game every day. I'm happy in such a situation," concluded Meneses, basking in the glory of yet another triumphant season for Creamline.
