Creamline guns for a third straight victory and a share of the lead, while Capital1 and PLDT seek to break troubling patterns as the PVL All-Filipino Conference resumes Saturday at the FilOil Centre in San Juan City.
The Cool Smashers take on winless ZUS Coffee at 6 p.m., looking to sustain their strong start and keep pace with the unbeaten Nxled Chameleons, while the Solar Spikers and the High Speed Hitters collide at 1 p.m. in a matchup loaded with pressure, pride and the need to build momentum in the early going of the Siklab Series.
Meanwhile, Clearskiin shoots for a third straight win against winless VNS in the Spikers’ Turf encounter at 3:30 p.m.
With the conference marking the league’s 10th season, every match carries added weight under the single-round elimination format, which leaves little room for costly missteps in the race to the semifinals.
Creamline returns to action after an extended break following victories over Akari and Galeries Tower. The Cool Smashers will look to pick up where they left off, relying on their depth, experience and balanced attack to extend their unbeaten run.
Anchored by Jema Galanza, Tots Carlos, Michele Gumabao, Bernadette Pons and Alyssa Valdez, Creamline boasts a battle-tested lineup capable of dictating the tempo and delivering in pressure situations. With a deep bench at its disposal, the squad has the personnel to maintain its intensity through crucial rotations.
But the Cool Smashers cannot afford to take the Thunderbelles lightly.
“Syempre, good problem din sa’min ’yung mga national team namin, bumalik na. Kailangan na magtrabaho talaga. ’Yun ’yung blessing sa’min. Kahit good problem, talagang sa practice, napaka-competitive nila kaya medyo minsan lang naman mahirap. Mga six times six days a week, gano’n kahirap, gano’n kadali pala,” said Creamline head coach Sherwin Meneses.
“Let’s see ’yung mga next games namin, kasi ’yun nga ’yung sinabi ko last time, required talaga maglaro lahat. Talagang totally, dapat mag-perform ’yung isang player sa isang team. So hopefully, ’yung mga reserve pa namin, sa next game, makapag-perform din,” he added.
Although ZUS Coffee has dropped its first two assignments, the team showed signs of progress in its most recent outing, pushing the Solar Spikers to five sets before yielding in the decider, 8-15, last Tuesday. The performance offered a glimpse of the Thunderbelles’ potential and the fight they can bring against a more established contender.
With the need to get on the board growing more urgent, ZUS Coffee will be out to turn that encouraging showing into a victory and avoid digging itself a deeper hole in the standings.
Zam Nolasco, Jolina dela Cruz, Jovelyn Gonzaga, Fiola Ceballos, Kate Santiago and Riza Nogales headline the Thunderbelles’ bid to upset the Cool Smashers and derail their early-season surge.
Creamline enters as the slight favorite, but its edge will depend on execution. In a tournament where every set can shape a team’s semifinal prospects, lineup combinations, defensive discipline and composure in the closing stretches could prove decisive.
Capital1 and PLDT, on the other hand, face contrasting but equally pressing challenges as they try to keep their campaigns on track.
The Solar Spikers have built a reputation for marathon matches, surviving another five-set thriller against the Akari Chargers before escaping with a 21-19 victory in the decider. They also blew a 2-0 set lead against Choco Mucho on Oct. 10 in Cebu, and suffered a reverse sweep.
Their latest five-set escape against the Thunderbelles underscored both their resilience and their tendency to make matches harder than they need to be.
Against PLDT, Capital1 will need to sustain its attack and sharpen its finishing to avoid another prolonged battle. Bella Belen, Erika Santos and Vanie Gandler are expected to spearhead the Solar Spikers, with Pauline Gaston, Cherry Nunag, Shaya Adorador and Sydney Niegos providing support.
The challenge, however, will be formidable. PLDT, one of the pre-tournament favorites, enters the match under pressure after consecutive defeats that have put its early title credentials under scrutiny.
The High Speed Hitters have the veteran firepower to reverse their fortunes, but they need a more consistent showing to prevent their opening struggles from becoming a serious obstacle in the semis race.
Savi Davison, who managed a combined 15 points in PLDT’s first two games, will be eager to rediscover her scoring touch. The High Speed Hitters will also look to their imposing frontline, led by Kim Dy, Alleiah Malaluan, Majoy Baron, Mika Reyes and Dell Palomata, to disrupt Capital1’s attack and provide a stronger presence at the net.
For Capital1, the priority is to avoid another late collapse. For PLDT, the mission is to translate its roster’s potential into results.
