Erica Staunton finds her rhythm with Creamline

As one of the youngest import in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference, Erica Staunton is beginning to find her footing amid the pressures of playing professionally in the Philippines.

The 23-year-old American is gradually turning her initial nervousness into confidence and excitement as she navigates her role in this volleyball-loving nation.

Staunton, who made a notable impact in her first two games, acknowledges the challenge of acclimating to a new environment and high expectations. “There definitely were some pre-game jitters,” Staunton admitted. “But I’ve been working on shifting that nervousness into excitement and embracing the process.” Her determination paid off as she delivered an impressive 26-point performance in Creamline’s hard-fought victory over Farm Fresh.

Staunton’s contribution included 23 attacks, three blocks, and 14 excellent receptions, leading the Cool Smashers to a 24-26, 25-23, 25-21, 25-16 win.

Despite the pressure, Staunton finds solace in the joy of playing in the Philippines, where volleyball is more than just a sport—it’s a passion.

“I remind myself to enjoy the game and embrace the excitement,” she said. “Creamline does a great job ensuring that we, as players, focus on having fun. If we’re not having fun, we’re not playing to our full potential.”

The Cool Smashers’ winning culture and the support of her teammates have played a crucial role in helping Staunton adjust.

With a championship pedigree and a roster full of exceptional hitters, the Cool Smashers have provided Staunton with the stability and encouragement she needs.

In their opening week, Creamline ended with a 1-1 record, showcasing their resilience and depth.

Staunton’s standout performance was complemented by her teammates, with Michele Gumabao adding 21 points and Pangs Panaga contributing 12 markers. “Looking to my teammates for composure has been invaluable,” Staunton noted. “Creamline is a championship team, and they’re not unfamiliar with pressure, so it’s easier to rely on them to help ease my own.”

For Staunton, the journey with Creamline is not just about individual performance but about contributing to a team effort. “There’s a lot of pressure on the imports,” she said. “But one person can’t win a game. It’s definitely a team effort.”
