The Philippines rallied late but still fell short against Vietnam, 19-25, 17-25, 29-31, to open its AVC Cup for Women Pool A campaign, Sunday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.
The Creamline-bannered Nationals went on a dream start, zooming to an 8-4 advantage in the first set before the Vietnamese came back with a 13-3 blast and ran away with it, 25-19.
In the second frame, the Philippines was only down by two, 16-18, before Vietnam went on a wild 7-1 finishing kick to move on the verge of a sweep.
The women's national team then played its finest in the third salvo, going point-per-point with Vietnam but ran out of steam in the end, capped by Tots Carlos' net touch.
"I'm very proud, especially when I do see those fans who cheer for us. I'm very happy right now," said libero Kyla Atienza who impressed in her international debut.
Thi Thanh Thuy Tran led the way for Vietnam with 20 points built on 17 attacks, two service aces, and a block.
Thi Nguyet Ang Pham and Thi Bich Thuy Tran delivered 10 points apiece as well for the victors.
"They are very good. For me, it's a good experience and the exposure to play against other countries," said Atienza on their foes.
Jema Galanza paced the Philippines with 13 points, while Michele Gumabao had 11 of her own.
Carlos added nine points, while Ced Domingo and Jeanette Panaga got seven and six apiece.
The Philippines will have a chance to bounce back on Tuesday against defending champion China, 7 pm, at the same venue.
