In a much-anticipated comeback, Jovelyn Gonzaga made a resounding impact on her return to the Cignal HD Spikers, propelling the team to a thrilling victory against the Petro Gazz Angels in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference.
Gonzaga's exceptional performance, including 13 points, 20 excellent digs, and six excellent receptions, inspired her team to rally from a set-one loss and secure a remarkable four-set triumph at the Filoil EcoOil Centre.
The atmosphere was electric as Gonzaga stepped back onto the court for Cignal, and her joy was palpable.
"It feels incredible and fulfilling to play for Cignal again," Gonzaga exclaimed. "As Coach Shaq [delos Santos] said, we came prepared and gave our all. I'm excited to showcase the skills our coaches have taught us."
The 31-year-old opposite spiker had last donned the Cignal jersey in 2019. Despite struggling in the first two sets against the formidable Petro Gazz Angels, Gonzaga embraced her promise to step up for her team, igniting a comeback in the latter sets.
Acknowledging the significance of Coach Shaq delos Santos's trust in her abilities, Gonzaga expressed her gratitude. She had previously played under delos Santos during her tenure with the Philippine national team.
"I'm grateful for Coach Shaq's faith in me. The trust never wavered, even when I struggled in the first and second sets. He was there to remind me that they needed my leadership on the court," Gonzaga shared.
Gonzaga's pivotal role in the HD Spikers' commanding five-point run in the fourth set proved decisive in establishing a lead and ultimately securing victory against Petro Gazz. Her determination and resilience shone through, exemplifying her status as a top athlete.
The Central Philippine University alumna also expressed her joy at reuniting with familiar faces such as Ces Molina, Rachel Daquis, and Coach delos Santos at Cignal.
"It's an incredible feeling to play alongside teammates you know will always have your back," Gonzaga explained. "Every time I looked on the court, I knew I had someone supporting me. When I see Ces [Molina], I know she'll fight. When I see Rachel [Daquis], I know she'll never give up."
Gonzaga also emphasized the positive impact of Coach delos Santos's strategic choices, which ensured that every player's strengths were utilized. She particularly relished the opportunity to team up with Daquis once again.
"The best thing about Coach Shaq is that he knows the team inside out. He inserted Rachel in every critical moment, and as you witnessed, she stepped up. I missed that feeling of being on the court with Rachel, and finally, I felt it again."
