In Philippine volleyball, certain duos transcend time and become legendary. Among these celebrated partnerships stands the formidable pair of Jovelyn Gonzaga and Rachel Anne Daquis, affectionately known as Gonzaquis.
With an illustrious history of achievements and victories, the duo's legacy continues to flourish, culminating in a recent triumph that highlights the vital role of their head coach, Shaq Delos Santos.
During the electrifying match on Tuesday, as the HD Spikers swept Choco Mucho to secure their place in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference semifinals, Gonzaga and Daquis proved their enduring prowess once more. But it was Gonzaga's revelation about the pivotal role of Coach Shaq in their success that truly illuminated the essence of Gonzaquis' triumph.
Beaming with pride and excitement, Gonzaga shared how her partnership with Daquis has consistently led them to the semifinals and even to the finals.
"Not to brag, it's really delightful because every time Rachel and I play together, we make it to the semifinals, we make it to the finals," Gonzaga cheerfully expressed.
The Bionic Ilongga, who had recently returned to Cignal, attributed her exceptional performance on the court to the presence of Daquis, and vice versa.
It all boiled down to trust, Gonzaga revealed, narrating a significant turning point in her career. Coach Shaq, ever the believer, had shown unwavering faith in her abilities even after she returned from an ACL injury in 2019.
"I have accepted that I won't be able to return to the national team, and I have come to terms with everything because, of course, I gained weight. But Coach Shaq was the first person who believed in me, who approached me and said, 'Come back, play for the national team,'" Gonzaga shared, her voice filled with gratitude and admiration.
Delos Santos, the mastermind behind the HD Spikers' strategies, was thrilled to witness the reunion of Gonzaquis. He recognized the duo's profound impact on the team, especially during critical games.
"They ask me why I returned to Cignal when other teams tried to recruit me. I told them I'm already accustomed to Coach Shaq's program, I know Coach Shaq trusts me, and Rachel Ann Daquis is here. I didn't want to start all over again, so it all boiled down to trust," Gonzaga explained.
Daquis echoed Gonzaga's sentiments, emphasizing the importance of communication and familiarity within the team. Despite their experience in high-pressure situations, nerves still occasionally crept in, but the duo had learned to conquer them through effective communication.
"We also struggle, face challenges, and experience nervousness. Perhaps what really matters is communication," Daquis humbly admitted.
With a remarkable 4-1 record in Pool B, Cignal HD Spikers successfully advanced to the semifinals, proving that their synergy and trust under the guidance of Coach Shaq were integral to their achievements.
Delos Santos confidently affirmed, "We still have a lot of plans. Even before we came together, it was already another opportunity and blessing to be reunited."
