Grethcel Soltones shines after inspiring encounter with Ran Takahashi

Grethcel Soltones took center stage in the Akari Chargers' decisive four-set victory over Farm Fresh in the knockout quarterfinals of the 2024 Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference. Her performance, which was nothing short of stellar, was spurred by an encounter with Japan's volleyball sensation, Ran Takahashi.

Takahashi, recently appointed as Akari's brand ambassador, was a notable presence during the Saturday double-header. The Ryujin Nippon ace not only cheered from the sidelines but also made a special visit to the Chargers' dugout to wish them good luck. This personal interaction left a profound impact on Soltones, who cited Takahashi as a significant source of inspiration.

“Actually, part si Ran sa inspiration ko kasi nakikita ko siya hindi lang siya cute, magaling din siya sa technique ‘yun yung sinasabi ni Coach [Taka]. So ayun, nung pumasok siya sabi ko lang ‘Hi Ran! It’s nice to see you,” Soltones shared.

Fueled by this motivation, Soltones delivered an all-around performance that showcased her versatility and skill. She registered 17 points, complemented by 10 excellent receptions and nine excellent digs, leading her team to their first-ever semifinal appearance. Her dynamic play was crucial in securing the Chargers’ place in the next round.

Despite the impressive victory, Soltones remained focused on the team's areas for improvement. She highlighted the need for enhanced team cohesion and resilience, particularly in high-pressure situations.

“Yun nga, ‘yung kailangan pa naming ma-improve as a team is ‘yung paano kami maging masaya. ‘Yun nga, parang kanina like ‘yung mga games na naghahabol kami ng set, ‘yun ‘yung naging problema namin,” said the 28-year-old outside hitter.

Soltones emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive and proactive mindset, especially in critical moments. “Tatahimik kami, tapos titingin kami kung sino ‘yung mauuna, parang ganun. So kailangan first set pa lang, kailangan may mag-step up agad. ‘Yun nga, enjoyment talaga,” she added.

In her reflection, Soltones acknowledged the hard work and dedication of her teammates, recognizing that their journey is far from over. She stressed the importance of not letting the current success cloud their ultimate goal.

“Sabi ko nga, hindi kami dumating dito dahil easy lang ‘yung ginawa namin. Also, parang inspiration ko is my teammates, the hard work, especially sabi ko nga, sabi nga namin, kapag gitgitan ‘yung laban, hanap ka ng pwede mong kapitan,” she said.

Soltones also made it clear that the Chargers must remain grounded and focused on their ultimate objective. “Yun nga, parang ‘di namin iniisip ‘yun eh. Siguro for others, historic na siya pero kasi ‘yun nga, hangga’t hindi pa namin nahahawakan ‘yung trophy, wala pa kaming napapatunayan,” she concluded.
