Iris Tolenada grateful for support given by F2

The Philippine volleyball community was abuzz with excitement as news broke out before F2 Logistics' match against Kinh Bac-Bac Ninh that their setter, Iris Tolenada, had signed a deal with GS Caltex Seoul, a prestigious team in the Korean Volleyball League.

For Tolenada, this opportunity marked a significant milestone in her career, paving the way for more Filipinas to explore opportunities abroad and gain exposure on the international stage.

Tolenada, standing tall at 5-foot-9 and with Filipino-American roots, was one of the six Filipinas who applied for the first-ever KOVO Asian quota draft. Although she wasn't chosen during the draft in April, her dedication and skill did not go unnoticed. Just recently, she received a message expressing the interest of a team from the KVL to acquire her services as an Asian quota import.

Her new team, GS Caltex, had initially picked Medi Yoku of Indonesia, an outside hitter, during the draft. However, their plans changed, and they later announced the acquisition of Thai setter Soraya Phomla to replace the Indonesian player.

But fate had other plans, and today, the Kixx officially announced Tolenada's signing for the 2023-24 season.

"It's kinda crazy," quipped Tolenada, who was yet to play in the ongoing 2023 Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference.

"I was part of the KOVO draft, and I didn't get chosen, and that was okay with me. You go into these things hoping for the best and being okay if you aren't chosen; it's just not your time," continued the humble playmaker.

"But I got a text saying that a team from Korea wants me, so I'm just very fortunate enough to be selected, and I'm just excited and grateful."

The news of Tolenada's signing was received with enthusiasm by her current team, F2 Logistics. Head coach Regine Diego acknowledged that this move would not only contribute to Tolenada's growth but also uplift volleyball in the Philippines.

Playing in a league like KVL, known for its competitive level, would undoubtedly sharpen Tolenada's skills and provide invaluable experience.

"The team, the management, the team owners are very proud of what Iris received. This message will be seen by young players, and it will boost their morale, seeing Ate Iris succeeding. So, you know, everybody wants to be next, right?" said Diego, beaming with pride.

"Of course, this will raise the level of volleyball in the Philippines. Represent us well, Iris. We believe in you," she added, moments after their four-set win over Kinh Bac-Bac Ninh, securing their place in the bronze medal match on Sunday.

Tolenada expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and revealed that she was prepared to take on the challenge in South Korea. She wasted no time, as she would immediately proceed with the necessary paperwork and head to South Korea to commence training with GS Caltex.

Meanwhile, Tolenada's teammate, Majoy Baron, was among the first to congratulate her on the exciting venture ahead.

"Very happy and envious of Iris because what a great opportunity to play in another country. Wish you luck! Good luck!" said Baron, who had an outstanding performance, scoring 20 points against Bac Ninh.
