Jema Galanza reflects on roller coaster ride heading to FIVB Challengers

In the lead-up to the 2024 FIVB Challenger Cup, Jema Galanza found herself on an emotional roller coaster.

The former PVL MVP, committed to representing Alas Pilipinas in the Volleyball Nations League qualifier after missing out on the AVC Challenge Cup, faced a significant hurdle during team preparations—a rolled ankle.

The injury affected Galanza's jumping ability, prompting head coach Jorge Souza de Brito to consider deploying the Creamline star as a libero initially, addressing a pressing issue exacerbated by Jennifer Nierva's absence due to injury.

However, just days before the Challenger Cup commenced, Galanza defied expectations, demonstrating remarkable recovery and reclaiming her position on the court.

Despite these challenges, Galanza embraced her role with determination, focused on contributing to the national team's efforts in any capacity possible.

In their match against Vietnam, although the outcome was a straight-set defeat (14-25, 22-25, 21-25) at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on a Friday night, Galanza showcased her versatility as a service specialist.

“Dahil nga siyempre ‘di natin ine-expect yung mga mangyayari sa loob ng team namin. So doon tayo focus kung pa'no maso-solve yung problema. Ako naman, kung ano ibibigay sa akin ni coach, gagawin ko naman yung best ko, yung part ko para makatulong sa Pilipinas,” Galanza remarked.

Despite the loss, Galanza expressed gratitude for being part of Alas Pilipinas once again, especially alongside younger teammates whom she noted had shown significant improvement.

“Masaya na part na ulit ako ng Alas Pilipinas then nakasama ko yung mga bata, sobrang laki ng improvement and sobrang laki pa ng igagaling ng team na to," Galanza added optimistically.
