Amid Zhetysu VC’s powerful march to the finals of the 2025 AVC Women’s Champions League, Ukrainian star Karyna Denysova found herself captivated — not just by the intense competition on the court, but by the passion and energy of Filipino volleyball fans.
Fresh off commanding victories over two of the Philippines’ Premier Volleyball League (PVL) powerhouses, Creamline and PLDT, Denysova couldn’t help but offer high praise for the level of play and the unique atmosphere she encountered in Manila.
“They're really good, all teams,” Denysova shared after their Pool A campaign. “It's different volleyball from what we usually play. For us, it’s a new challenge and a valuable experience."
Zhetysu opened their journey with a statement win, sweeping Creamline Cool Smashers, 25-16, 25-17, 25-17. They followed it up by overpowering the PLDT High Speed Hitters, 25-13, 25-22, 25-20, securing an early ticket to the semifinals and setting the tone for their title hunt.
Facing spirited Filipino squads on their home turf proved to be a refreshing challenge for the Kazakh club. For Denysova, the electric vibe inside the venue — a sea of passionate cheers and colorful displays of support — became a memorable highlight of her first overseas stint.
"My experience here is really good," said Denysova, her eyes lighting up. "I like the atmosphere, the spectators are amazing — they created such incredible energy. The preparation, the organization, the love for volleyball — I really like it here.”
Although Denysova has played in major tournaments like the Asian Championship in Kazakhstan, the 2025 AVC Champions League marked her first competition abroad — and her first time stepping foot in the Philippines. She quickly fell in love with the hospitality and spirit of the local volleyball community.
“This is not my first experience playing internationally, but it's my first time abroad, my first time in the Philippines — and it has been really, really amazing for me,” she said.
Denysova, now fully locked in, has been embracing every match as an opportunity to learn and evolve. She marveled at the distinct styles showcased by clubs across Asia, which tested Zhetysu’s adaptability and mental fortitude.
"All teams here play different volleyball," Denysova explained. "It's faster defense, faster sets. Of course, it's hard, but I stay really proud of my team because every ball is hard, but they stay focused and success comes to us."
She credited their tactical preparations, including countless hours of video analysis and practices tailored for each opponent. “Like our coach said, we watch teams, study their tactics, and practice it. It wasn’t a secret for us what each team would bring," Denysova added with a grin.
That laser-sharp focus was on full display during the semifinals, where Zhetysu dismantled Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-21, to punch their ticket to the championship round.
Their win also guaranteed them a prestigious spot in the 2025 FIVB Women’s Club World Championship — a dream come true for Denysova and her squad.
Now, as Zhetysu awaits the winner between Vietnam’s VTV Binh Dien Long An and China’s Beijing Baic Motor, Denysova remains steadfast in her mission: to carry the lessons of Manila’s roaring crowds and the grit of Asian volleyball into the final stage.
"We take every experience, every ball, every match seriously," she said. "Because this is what makes us stronger."
