Laure, Rondina shine in national team reunion

When Eya Laure and Sisi Rondina took their positions on the court for Alas Pilipinas, it was a nostalgic moment for fans and players alike.

The duo, who once led the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses to the UAAP Season 81 Finals, reunited after five years, this time representing the Philippines on a bigger stage.

The two volleyball stars, now pivotal players in their respective Premier Volleyball club teams, brought their dynamic synergy to the national team during the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women.

Their reunion sparked excitement and pride, both for themselves and the legion of fans who witnessed their remarkable chemistry.

“Sobrang UST feels. Nakaka-miss. Masaya ako na dito kami nag-reunite sa national team. Sobrang proud ako sa growth niya (Laure) sa mundo ng volleyball talaga,” Rondina shared, her voice brimming with emotion.

Rondina, now a standout for Choco Mucho, and Laure, a mainstay for Chery Tiggo, delivered stellar performances in their impressive debut.

Together, they scored 16 and 17 points respectively, leading the Philippines to a four-set victory over Australia, 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21.

The thrilling match was watched by 4,945 enthusiastic fans at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila.

Rondina’s powerful attacks and precision were evident as she tallied 15 successful attacks and a service ace.

Laure, showcasing her versatility, recorded 14 spikes out of 28 attempts, along with two aces and one block. The synergy between the two was palpable, reminiscent of their college days but honed to a new level of excellence.

Laure credited Rondina for her continuous improvement and confidence on the court.

“Actually, malaking tulong si Ate Sisi sa akin kasi yung talagang tiwala and confidence ko sa paglalaro, lalong lalo na sa open, may natututunan ako habang naglalaro laking tulong ni Ate Sisi,” said Laure.

"Salamat din kay Ate Sisi sa laging paggabay sa akin since UST hanggang sa tumapak kami ng national team nandyan siya,” she added.

With this victory, the Alas Pilipinas squad looks ahead to their next challenge against India, a team that has been dominant with straight-set wins over Iran and Chinese Taipei.

As the tournament progresses, the duo aims to build on their triumphant return, bringing the same passion and skill that once dazzled their university and now inspires their country.
