Madayag's grit leads Choco Mucho despite tendonitis struggles

In a display of sheer determination and leadership, Choco Mucho's team captain Maddie Madayag showcased her resilience on the court, battling through tendonitis to steer her team to a resounding straight-set triumph over Akari in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference.

Head coach Dante Alinsunurin couldn't help but express his admiration for Madayag's unwavering spirit despite her physical challenges.

"Sobrang proud ako kahit na may nararamdaman, nilalaban pa rin talaga niya," he remarked, highlighting her extraordinary commitment to the team's cause.

Madayag's struggles with tendonitis had surfaced early in the conference, forcing her to sit out Choco Mucho's previous encounter against Cignal.

However, her indomitable spirit saw her return to action, albeit grappling with discomfort, in a grueling five-set battle against PLDT before facing off against the Chargers.

In their latest showdown, Madayag led by example, propelling her squad to a convincing 25-17, 25-22, 25-21 victory at the Ynares Center. The 26-year-old middle blocker showcased her prowess with 11 points, comprising eight powerful attacks and three crucial kill blocks, underscoring her pivotal role in the team's success.

Alinsunurin reflected on Madayag's resilience, emphasizing that her ability to persevere through adversity has been evident since her collegiate days.

"Hindi lang naman ngayon eh, dati naman na niya ‘yan ginagawa talaga nung collegiate days niya pa," he acknowledged, applauding her unwavering commitment to the team's cause.

Despite grappling with persistent discomfort, Madayag remained steadfast in her determination to contribute to her team's success.

"Kailan siya nag-flare up? Siguro overused lang din talaga, 'yun 'yung sabi ng doctor. For now, may nafe-feel pa rin ako but nakakapaglaro naman ako ng maayos," she disclosed, highlighting her ability to soldier on despite the physical strain.

Acknowledging her leadership role within the team, Madayag remained humble, recognizing the presence of other leaders like Sisi Rondina who step up in her absence.

"Bawat isa sa team kaya nilang mag lead and 'yun nga, sundin lang namin 'yung sistema na gusto ng mga coaches, hindi naman po kami mahihirapan," she affirmed, underscoring the collective strength and unity within the Choco Mucho squad.
