Maddie Madayag on finally beating Creamline: 'Finally, we overcame'

The tides of fate finally shifted for Choco Mucho as they vanquished their long-standing nemesis, Creamline, ending a daunting 12-game losing streak.

The Flying Titans scripted a tale of redemption, orchestrating a remarkable comeback from a 0-2 deficit to secure a sensational 13-25, 19-25, 25-21, 25-20, 18-16 victory in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference semifinals.

Led by the resilient team captain, Maddie Madayag, whose journey with the squad dates back to its inception in 2019, Choco Mucho demonstrated unwavering determination.

"Finally, that's all we can say. We've prepared for numerous conferences against them, always falling short. But finally, we overcame. The journey has been tough, but at least we bounced back," expressed Madayag, reflecting on the emotional rollercoaster.

Acknowledging the pivotal role of teamwork and divine intervention, Madayag credited their coach, Dante, and their unwavering faith.

"Coach Dante emphasized teamwork, and we are immensely grateful to the Lord. We kept saying 'Thank you, Lord,' because despite cramps and exhaustion, no one got injured. The Lord never abandoned us, and we fought till the end," she shared.

The victory wasn't merely about breaking a streak; it symbolized the culmination of strategic enhancements and invaluable lessons.

Madayag highlighted the significance of their recent finals encounter with Creamline and the infusion of talent in the form of young setter Mars Alba and seasoned opposite spiker Royse Tubino.

"Our experience from the previous finals against them provided insights into their game. They were becoming predictable," Madayag explained, underscoring the team's growth.

"Moreover, the addition of veterans and setters, especially Mars Alba, was crucial. Her strategic plays, particularly in setting up our middles and connecting with Royse (Tubino), were instrumental," she added.

Tubino, stepping into the spotlight in the absence of injured star Kat Tolentino, delivered a stellar performance, amassing 20 points, predominantly from powerful attacks, and showcasing defensive prowess with 12 excellent digs. Meanwhile, Alba's entry in the first set injected momentum, tallying 10 excellent sets and altering the course of the game.

Reflecting on the significance of maturity and resilience, Madayag emphasized the collective effort required to overcome seasoned adversaries like Creamline.

"Sometimes, we lack experience, and that's where their maturity comes into play. They've been at the top for a while. Ate Royse (Tubino) exemplifies that maturity," she acknowledged.

Looking ahead, Madayag aspires for the historic triumph to serve as a catalyst as they brace for crucial encounters against Chery Tiggo and Petro Gazz in the round-robin semifinals.

"That's what we lacked before. We were fairly new during the finals last conference. That's what we've been missing, but hopefully, we can sustain our maturity and confidence as a team," she concluded with optimism, hoping to script more chapters of success in their journey.
