The lure of a solo lead – or a share of the top spot – should provide all the motivation Nxled and Choco Mucho need as they shoot for a third straight victory when the PVL All Filipino Conference Siklab Series resumes Thursday (Oct. 22) at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
But standing in their way are two hungry teams with their own semifinal ambitions. Galeries Tower hopes to finally break through after a winless start, while Farm Fresh seeks to bounce back from a painful five-set defeat and derail Choco Mucho’s early surge.
Nxled appears to have the more manageable assignment, facing the struggling Highrisers in the 1 p.m. opener. Galeries Tower has dropped its first two games, one in straight sets and the other in four, and needs a major lift in firepower to challenge the surging Chameleons.
Choco Mucho, meanwhile, braces for a sterner test against a resurgent Farm Fresh side in the 6 p.m. main game. The Foxies swept the Highrisers before dropping a five-set decision to the Chameleons, leaving them eager to turn a promising campaign into another statement win.
Meanwhile, National U-Archipelago Builders and Alpha Insurance face off in a compelling Spikers' Turf match at 3:30 p.m., with both teams looking to build on contrasting opening-game victories.
The Bulldogs secured a dominant four-set win over the VNS Griffins last Tuesday, while the Protectors grinded out a grueling five-set triumph against the Savouge Spin Doctors back on Oct. 10.
Back in the PVL, with the single-round-robin elimination format leaving little room for error, every match carries considerable weight in the race for the semis. Nxled and Choco Mucho have swept their first two assignments to join idle Creamline at the top of the nine-team field, with the Top 4 advancing to the semifinals and the top two earning twice-to-beat advantages.
Nxled coach Ettore Guidetti is expected to bank anew on his wards’ growing cohesion and formidable depth, with a star-studded roster capable of producing points from virtually every position.
The Chameleons boast an imposing arsenal led by Brooke Van Sickle, Myla Pablo, EJ Cariño, Jovelyn Fernandez and Jonah Escamillan, backed by a strong middle anchored by Jackie Acuña, MJ Phillips and Ranya Musa.
The arrival of playmaker Gel Cayuna has added another dimension to Nxled’s attack. Beyond keeping the offense fluid and well-distributed, Cayuna has emerged as another scoring threat through her trademark 1-2 plays and cleverly placed shots.
“As I told you, we have to take care of our side-out. And try to know each other much better. Yes, we know very well almost all the players. But not all the players, they know Brooke. So, this is an important one, where they put in,” said Guidetti.
“It's a big help. But I really think that it's kind of difficult to ask to my setter to be super connected to Brooke only with two games. So, we are progressing. We are getting better,” he added.
Still, the Chameleons cannot afford to take the Highrisers lightly. Galeries Tower showed flashes of its fighting spirit against Farm Fresh, with Erika Deloria erupting for 21 points despite the four-set setback. But the Highrisers need more consistent scoring support if they are to threaten a Nxled side armed with multiple attacking options.
Coach Aying Esteban faces the challenge of finding the right rotations and defensive combinations to contain Nxled’s varied offensive threats while keeping his own squad competitive. With the Chameleons boasting firepower on the wings and strength at the net, Galeries Tower will need to be sharper in both floor defense and transition play.
Nxled did have to go the distance to subdue Farm Fresh last weekend, prevailing in five sets, but its depth and offensive balance make it the clear favorite to extend its winning run.
Choco Mucho, on the other hand, has opened its campaign with the kind of resilience and attacking punch that have made the Flying Titans a team to watch.
The Flying Titans overcame a two-set deficit to stun Capital1 in a five-set thriller in Cebu on Oct. 10, then followed up with a dominant straight-set victory over ZUS Coffee on Oct. 15 to underscore the promise of a healthy, battle-ready lineup.
Eya Laure, Sisi Rondina, Des Cheng, Isa Molde and Kat Tolentino headline the attack, with Jaila Atienza, Jen Villegas, Lorene Toring and Lorraine Pecaña providing additional options and depth.
But Farm Fresh has enough firepower and experience to make the Flying Titans work for every point.
The Foxies are eager to rebound from their narrow five-set loss to the Chameleons, and they have the weapons to make life difficult for Choco Mucho. Trisha Tubu, Ces Molina, Royse Tubino, Rizza Cruz, Ara Galang, Riri Meneses, Renee Peñafiel and the durable Mylene Paat-Rezanova give Farm Fresh a formidable mix of power, experience and versatility.
The battle of playmakers could prove decisive, with Alohi Robins-Hardy and Louie Romero tasked with keeping the Foxies’ offense in rhythm. Against Choco Mucho’s deep attacking corps, Farm Fresh will need crisp distribution, effective ball control and sustained pressure at the net to keep pace.
For the Flying Titans, the challenge will be to sustain their early momentum against a team eager to make amends. For the Foxies, it is an opportunity to turn a near-miss into another victory and strengthen their Final Four push.
