Oly Okaro sets sights higher: 'Fifth place is nice, but I'm striving for more'

In a thrilling display of resilience and power, Akari’s Oly Okaro etched her name in Premier Volleyball League (PVL) history with a remarkable 38-point performance, leading the Chargers to a dramatic five-set victory over the Flying Titans in the 2024 Reinforced Conference.

This electrifying match, held on Tuesday, saw Okaro’s explosive scoring echoing the feats of past greats.

Her effort not only secured the win for Akari but also placed her fifth all-time for individual points scored by a reinforcement in PVL history, and second in the league’s professional era.

Her performance came tantalizingly close to the record of 44 points set by Prisilla Rivera less than two years ago.

Despite Akari’s slow start—falling behind 0-2 in sets—Okaro’s relentless drive proved pivotal. Her 38 points included an impressive tally of 35 attacks, two aces, and one block, propelling the Chargers to a nail-biting 18-25, 16-25, 25-21, 25-23, 15-13 victory. Her performance was instrumental in turning the tide of the match and securing a crucial win.

Reflecting on her historic game, Okaro remained humble.

“I would say it’s nice to be fifth in the league, but I probably could be better, so I’ll keep working to improve,” said Okaro, who had a strong debut with 16 points against Capital1 just days before.

Her resilience was evident as she played a critical role in rallying her team back from the brink.

“My mindset was just to keep fighting. Even though we lost the first two sets, it didn’t mean anything to me. I wanted to win, and I was determined to do everything I could to achieve that,” she added.

The 28-year-old American opposite spiker’s determination was a driving force for Akari, as they flipped the script from being on the ropes to sealing a memorable victory.

Her performance exemplified both physical prowess and mental fortitude, traits essential for overcoming such a challenging match.

Joining Cignal at the top of Pool B with a perfect 2-0 record, Okaro and the Chargers are set to continue their strong run with upcoming matches against Petro Gazz, ZUS Coffee, and the HD Spikers.
