Petro Gazz completed the romp of teams with twice-to-beat edges in the 2022 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference, repelling F2 Logistics, 25-14, 22-25. 25-20, 25-19, Tuesday evening at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan City.
The Angels put up a strong finishing kick in the third frame then pulled through in a see-saw battle in to advance while frustrating the Cargo Movers from staying in the hunt for a second straight championship after ruling the Champions League via sweep late last year.
Petro Gazz kept its poise and played with so much cohesion when it mattered most as they frustrated the Cargo Movers, who wrested an 11-9 lead in the fourth but fell behind at 13-16 as the Angels, with Jonah Sabete anchoring their big surge, took seven of the next nine points to storm ahead at 16-13.
They stretched their lead to five on another pair of Sabete hits and the Angels moved at match point with a six-point lead. The Cargo Movers saved one on a block of Aiza Pontillas but the Angels soared to the next round as Ara Galang's crosscourt hit after a long rally sailed long.
"Very, very happy kasi mahirap naman kung kami lang yung kaisa isang team na matatalo na may twice-to-beat," said Angels head coach Jerry Yee. "Very happy kasi itong si Jonah nag respond. Move on kami to the next level."
Grethcel Soltones fired 21 points while Sabete finished with 18 hits to spearhead the Angels' roll to the semis.
Maizo-Pontillas also recorded 18 points to go along with 23 excellent digs while Cienne Cruz and Bang Pineda joined hands on the defensive end with 18 excellent receptions and 16 excellent digs, respectively.
On the other hand, Kianna Dy and Aby Mara?o each had 11 points for the F2 Logistics. Majoy Baron had two blocks for 10 points.
