Petro Gazz embraces simplicity under new coach Timmy Sto. Tomas

Change is often accompanied by a sense of uncertainty, as teams adapt to new leadership and strategies.

Such is the case for the Petro Gazz Angels, who have recently embarked on a journey back to basics under the guidance of their new head coach, Timmy Sto. Tomas.

Sto. Tomas assumed the role of chief tactician for the Angels following the appointment of former coach Oliver Almadro as the team's Head of Volleyball Operations in late August. This transition meant that Petro Gazz had to adjust to a new coaching philosophy, and it seems like simplicity is the key.

"Magaan tapos simple. Yun lang po," shared Petro Gazz's star player, Grethcel Soltones, when asked about their new mentor's approach.

According to Soltones, Sto. Tomas simplifies their roles on the court, emphasizing straightforward volleyball. However, the simplicity is not always easy to execute, as Soltones admitted.

As the Angels made their debut in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League 2nd All-Filipino Conference against newcomers Galeries, it became evident that composure in crucial moments was crucial.

The Angels secured a straight sets win, with the second and third sets going down to the wire, highlighting their ability to stay composed under pressure.

For Coach Timmy Sto. Tomas, the familiarity with the team and its veteran core played a pivotal role in their successful debut. Having previously served as an assistant under Almadro in Petro Gazz, Sto. Tomas felt fortunate not to make significant adjustments.

Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Djanel Cheng, Chie Saet, and Grethcel Soltones, the experienced leaders of the team, contributed to the victory.

The team's culture, as described by Sto. Tomas, is marked by mutual support, a willingness to accept criticism, and an openness to change.

This collaborative environment has made the transition under new coaching smoother.

In addition to his role with Petro Gazz, Coach Sto. Tomas also coaches the Ateneo de Manila University men's team in the UAAP. He acknowledged that there's a notable difference in handling the two squads, as the pro league presents unique challenges.

The pressure is undeniable, but he remains confident in the team's preparation and is determined to lead them on the right path.
