In a dramatic turn of events, the PLDT High Speed Hitters faced a heartbreaking setback just moments before their crucial do-or-die game against Chery Tiggo. The team received the devastating news that their star player, Jovy Prado, had been ruled out for the rest of the Premier Volleyball League 2023 season due to an ACL tear in her left knee. The loss of Prado was undoubtedly a significant blow, but it ignited a fire within the team to rally and give their all for their fallen comrade.
The High Speed Hitters proved their mettle on Tuesday evening at the Philsports Arena, as they squared off against the Crossovers in a nail-biting encounter. Despite the absence of Prado, the team displayed an inspiring performance, pulling off a 25-21, 16-25, 25-23, 25-27, 15-12 victory that secured their place in the Invitational Conference semifinals.
As the news of Prado's injury spread throughout the team, the players found themselves grappling with mixed emotions - determination to succeed and the weight of Prado's absence. Mean Mendrez, one of the team's key players, stepped up to help fill the void left by Prado's absence. She put forth an outstanding effort, delivering a team-high 16 points with 13 attacks and three blocks in less than four sets of action.
For Mendrez, every point was for her "Ate Jovy."
"We are reaping the rewards of all our hard work during the offseason, even though we were short of one player. Our coach reminded us that despite missing one player, it doesn't diminish our strength because that's our motivation," said Mendrez.
It was a testament to the team's resilience and unity, as they harnessed their collective strength to honor Prado's spirit and dedication. Mendrez and Dell Palomata joined forces in the High Speed Hitters' final push, scoring their team's last five crucial points to secure a hard-fought victory against the retooled Chery Tiggo.
Palomata herself had an outstanding game, contributing 14 points, including a crucial block and a fierce staredown on Imee Hernandez that sent them to match point.
PLDT's head coach, whose leadership played a crucial role in the team's success, emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong mindset.
"Perhaps it's a test of character that is always being reminded to the players. We came from an ugly loss, and we said that today, our only mindset should be not to put pressure on ourselves about who will win, as that team will be the one to advance," said Ricafort, recalling their straight sets loss to Creamline last Thursday.
The High Speed Hitters' journey through the Invitational Conference has been marked by a rollercoaster of emotions, but their unwavering motivation to succeed for Prado has been a constant driving force. Before the game, Prado personally informed her teammates about her injury, but she also encouraged them not to worry and to give their all on the court.
"Just before she announced her injury, we told her, 'It's okay, Ate Jovy, don't be sad. We'll take care of it, and we'll make it up for you and the team," shared Mendrez.
