PVL toasts a season of records, resilience and rising stars

The Premier Volleyball League marks another milestone in its evolution as the country’s leading professional volleyball league with its first-ever PVL Press Corps Awards Night on Wednesday at Novotel Manila in Cubao, Quezon City.

Following the league’s first rookie draft and a record-breaking six-month All-Filipino Conference, the prestigious event brings together the brightest players, sharpest minds and most impactful teams in a night of recognition and celebration.

Headlining the honorees is Petro Gazz’s Brooke Van Sickle, who will be crowned the inaugural PVL Season MVP for her outstanding performance and leadership during the season.

“Tonight, we shine the spotlight on those who stood tallest, leapt highest, and dug deepest,” said league president Ricky Palou. “But in truth, every player, coach, staff member, and team emerged victorious. You elevated the game. You inspired a nation.”

The event will be streamed live at 7 p.m. exclusively on the Pilipinas LIVE app, allowing fans across the country to witness the celebration of excellence that defined the 2024 season.

Van Sickle’s MVP recognition was a testament to both her statistical dominance and the overwhelming support she earned from peers and the media. Her pivotal role in steering the Angels to their breakthrough AFC championship secured her place among the league’s elite.

Alas Pilipinas middle blocker Thea Gagate is named the PVL Press Corps Rookie of the Year, honored for her commanding presence at the net and vital contributions to ZUS Coffee’s historic quarterfinals appearance.

The formidable Creamline Cool Smashers earned the Team of the Year distinction after completing an unprecedented grand slam season. Their longtime tactician, Coach Sherwin Meneses, is also lauded as Coach of the Year, further solidifying the franchise’s dominance.

Off the court, Rebisco vice chair and CEO Jonathan Ng was hailed as Executive of the Year, credited for spearheading Creamline’s transformation into the PVL’s winningest franchise – an achievement capped by the grand slam feat.

Fan engagement was also given its spotlight, with Choco Mucho setter Deanna Wong receiving the PVL PC Fan Favorite award, the result of overwhelming fan votes from the league’s passionate and growing community.

Recognizing resilience and growth, the league also named Akari’s Eli Soyud as the Most Improved Player, Petro Gazz libero Alyssa Eroa the Comeback Player of the Year, and Chie Saet, also of the Angels, as the Ms. Quality Minutes.

An emotional highlight of the night will be the announcement of the Pilipinas LIVE Game of the Year, awarded to the epic quarterfinal clash between Choco Mucho and PLDT in the 2024-25 AFC – a match remembered for its sheer intensity and crowd-thrilling drama.

The Star of the Night, a light-hearted but glitzy recognition for charisma and presence, will add a glamorous note to the ceremony’s finale.

In a historic move, the PVL Press Corps will also acknowledge the trailblazers of its men’s counterpart, Spikers’ Turf. Criss Cross standout Jude Garcia will be named the first-ever Spikers’ Turf MVP, also earning a spot on the Mythical Team, which includes Sherwin Caritativo (Savouge) – best outside hitter, Ish Polvorosa (Criss Cross) – best setter, Gian Glorioso (Criss Cross) and Giles Torres (Savouge) – best middle blockers, Steven Rotter (Cignal) – best opposite spiker, and Vince Lorenzo (Cignal) – best libero.

“Tonight isn’t just about celebrating greatness. It’s about honoring the journey – from empty arenas in Bacarra, Ilocos Norte, when the league first went pro during the pandemic, to full-packed venues, thunderous cheers, and heart-stopping games. We’ll celebrate it all,” said PVL Press Corps president Lance Agcaoili of INQUIRER.net.
