As the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) season unfolded, Kyle Negrito found herself thrust into the spotlight once more, assuming the pivotal role of Creamline’s primary playmaker anew.
The spotlight, however, wasn’t always warm—Negrito faced a whirlwind of skepticism and criticism as she stepped into the shoes of a highly esteemed predecessor.
Amidst the trials and tribulations, Negrito’s resilience shone through, culminating in a defining moment that would etch her name in the annals of Philippine volleyball history. She played an instrumental role in Creamline’s remarkable achievement of a historic Grand Slam—the first-ever in the sport’s history in the country.
With the Cool Smashers battling from behind in the Invitationals, Negrito’s leadership was a beacon of hope. She orchestrated a staggering 25 excellent sets, leading Creamline from a 1-2 set deficit to clinch their first Invitationals championship in two years. Her performance was a testament to her growth and unwavering commitment, earning her both the Best Setter award and her first Finals MVP accolade.
Reflecting on her journey, Negrito shared, “Sabi nga ni [Coach Sherwin], dedma raw. Ako, yung mga kasama ko lang din pinanghahawakan ko. Binabalik ko lang din talaga yung tiwala na binibigay nila sa akin and I’m happy na nagresult siya.”
The road to the Grand Slam wasn’t devoid of personal challenges for Negrito. The season saw her relationship with Coach Sherwin Meneses evolve from a complex mix of tension and admiration.
When Negrito was named Finals MVP, she took a moment to acknowledge Meneses’ role in her development. Fighting back tears, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “Salamat din Coach She (Meneses). Bati na tayo, champion na tayo e.”
Negrito's journey was further complicated by the absence of key players. Tots Carlos and Alyssa Valdez were sidelined due to injuries, while Jema Galanza joined the team later after her commitments with Alas Pilipinas Women.
Despite these setbacks, Negrito’s leadership and the team’s unshakable chemistry remained steadfast. Their collective belief and determination to achieve the Grand Slam never wavered, even through their third attempt.
“Buong-buo pa rin yung kumpyansa kasi tulad nga ng palagi ko rin sinasabi, advantage namin this conference na kahit naman may mga nawala, kaming Creamline, matagal na kami magkakasama,” Negrito shared.
