In a tightly contested four-set battle against Galeries Tower, Creamline rookie Aleiah Torres finally had her moment to shine in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference.
After being picked last by the Cool Smashers in the first round of the PVL Rookie Draft, Torres hadn't seen any court time in the first three games. But in the 27-25, 26-28, 29-27, 25-19 victory over the Highrisers, she made her debut, sharing libero duties with Kyla Atienza.
The 22-year-old Fil-Canadian defensive specialist expressed her gratitude for the opportunity given by head coach Sherwin Meneses.
"It's just a great opportunity that he's given me to play on the court, trusting my abilities at this level. The girls, too, have been supporting me in every practice, and even today," said Torres. "They brought a lot of trust in me and support for my first game. I really, really appreciated that."
Torres' entry into the lineup was timely, as Creamline was locked in a fierce duel with an upset-seeking Galeries team.
The Brock University alumna aimed to inject positive energy and enthusiasm into the Cool Smashers, who were grappling to close out a determined Highrisers squad in a match that saw three sets stretch to the limit.
"I think I had lots of fun. I just wanted to bring lots of good energy and good vibes today. Just have lots of fun, play carefree. It's a good thing that we won today," Torres shared.
"For me, I just like to never give up. The game's never done until the last point. I always believe in our team and everything that we've trained. We always bring forth our best. I just always believe in us."
Throughout the match, Torres displayed remarkable composure, especially in the nail-biting opening set, which Creamline edged out narrowly. Her performance did not go unnoticed by head coach Meneses, who praised her resilience and potential.
“Siyempre masaya ako sa performance niya kahit nung first set, 'di talaga siya makahawak ng bola. Pero nakikita naman namin sa training na talagang may future 'yung si Aleiah, hinihintay lang talaga 'yung pagkakataon, 'yung break mapunta sa kanya,” said Meneses, a PVL champion coach.
“Hopefully, 'yung first game niya na 'to, mas marami pa. Next game, tingnan uli natin si Aleiah sa next game.”
Torres’ impactful debut has set the stage for what could be a promising career with the Cool Smashers.
