In a pulsating showdown at the Philsports Arena, Choco Mucho’s ever-loyal fans proved to be the x-factor in the Flying Titans’ exhilarating Game 1 quarterfinal victory over PLDT in the 2024-25 Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference playoffs.
Facing a hostile and deafening atmosphere, Savannah Davison and the High Speed Hitters struggled to maintain composure as the raucous crowd fueled Choco Mucho’s stunning 25-20, 25-19, 15-25, 20-25, 16-18 comeback win — a reverse sweep anchored by the brilliance of Sisi Rondina.
PLDT appeared poised to seize control after dominating the first two sets. But as momentum shifted, the unwavering roar of Choco Mucho’s supporters ignited a furious rally that ultimately turned the tide.
“I think going into the game, we knew it was going to be loud,” Davison admitted after the match. “But when they had the upper hand, let’s say by just a couple of points, it was hard to catch up. Once they go on a run, you can’t really hear yourself with all the Choco Mucho fans filling the arena.”
With the crowd’s relentless chants amplifying every Choco Mucho point, PLDT’s advantage never felt safe. Davison described the intense pressure, noting how even a slim deficit felt insurmountable.
“That’s what made it so tough — even though it was only a two- or three-point gap, it felt like they were ahead by 10 because of the crowd. It’s hard to stay calm and collected when a close game feels like a blowout,” she said.
Despite the crowd’s influence, Davison refused to pin the loss solely on external factors. The Fil-Canadian spiker took accountability for her own performance, acknowledging moments where she faltered.
“You know what, the first thing I think about is how I can be better,” Davison reflected. “I had a couple of errors this game, especially in the fourth set — or maybe the third — where I kinda struggled a little bit.”
Despite delivering a remarkable 25-point performance coupled with 19 excellent receptions, Davison knew she needed support. While she drew inspiration from her standout showing in PLDT’s earlier upset win over defending champions Creamline, Davison emphasized the importance of additional contributions.
“I think it’s the same story — as much as I hate to say it,” she said. “We just need a little bit of help. So hopefully, in the next game, more people show up and put some points on the board.”
As the High Speed Hitters prepare for Game 2, Davison stressed the significance of improved composure and efficient execution in closing out matches.
“I think the vibe in the dugout was more focused on the mental side of things,” she shared. “We were up two sets, so it was tough to swallow knowing the opportunity we had to win. Heading into the next game, we have to focus on closing out and pushing the score — avoiding those silly errors on our side of the net. I think that’s what’s most important.”
With their backs against the wall, Davison and PLDT face a daunting task — not only battling Choco Mucho’s talented roster but also withstanding the deafening wall of sound their loyal fans will undoubtedly provide once again.
