The Deanna Wong-Sisi Rondina connection quickly became the talk of the town. Representing Choco Mucho, the duo proved to be an unstoppable force, propelling their team to an impressive victory over Farm Fresh in their opening match. The Flying Titans dominated the game, securing a resounding 25-14, 25-7, 25-16 win on Thursday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan.
The remarkable partnership between Deanna Wong and Sisi Rondina was fostered by their shared Cebuano roots. Hailing from the same province, the two athletes instantly found a connection both on and off the court.
"We discussed the possibility of becoming teammates, and being from our home province of Cebu, we immediately connected and understood each other," revealed Wong, who showcased her exceptional setting skills and contributed eight points to the team's victory.
Wong further expressed her gratitude for Rondina's presence on the team, acknowledging her contributions not only in offense but also in defense. Rondina's experience from international beach volleyball competitions added immense value to Choco Mucho's gameplay.
"I am truly grateful that she is here because she provides significant assistance not only in offense and defense but also in what she has learned from international beach volleyball competitions. It's a massive help for us," Wong added.
Standing at a height of 5-foot-6, the high-leaping spiker Rondina displayed her exceptional talents, delivering an outstanding debut performance in the PVL. She finished the match with a game-high 14 points, including 13 successful attacks and a block. While still adjusting to the nuances of indoor play, Rondina shared her determination to convert all of Wong's sets, aiming to boost her teammate's confidence.
Throughout her volleyball career, the legendary University of Santo Tomas alumna has developed a habit of going all out to show appreciation for her setters.
Rondina's mindset during the game was simple: "Today, I just wanted to make Deanna feel how great she is at setting... I can't spike without her sets. That's what I wanted to make her feel. Every setter I play with, I want to make them feel that their sets are excellent, and that's why I try to score immediately."
Head coach Dante Alinsunurin couldn't help but marvel at the new weapon he had at his disposal. Rondina wasted no time introducing herself to the PVL with an impactful performance. In his second conference coaching the Flying Titans, Alinsunurin emphasized that Rondina brings several qualities that were lacking in the team during the All-Filipino Conference.
"We noticed the difference during the first conference when I joined. It was evident that the energy, courage, and determination that she brings to the court were exactly what we were missing. In our first game, she showcased her tremendous energy and the willingness of her teammates to follow her lead," Alinsunurin commented.
He is determined to guide Choco Mucho to their first podium finish and expressed his delight at the team's collective performance on the court.
"I am extremely pleased with the progress we're making because our actions on the court have become more unified. She may not speak much, but her presence and movements have a captivating effect on the team."
