In a remarkable display of resilience and determination, 22-year-old spiker Vanie Gandler from Cignal overcame a bout of flu to deliver a career-defining performance in the Premier Volleyball League Second All-Filipino Conference.
Despite missing recent team practices due to her illness, Gandler took center stage as the HD Spikers secured a hard-fought 25-15, 25-23, 18-25, 25-19 triumph over the struggling Petro Gazz at the Philsports Arena on Saturday.
Gandler's outstanding performance saw her amass a career-best 23 points, showcasing her prowess with 19 successful attacks, three crucial blocks, and an ace. This remarkable achievement not only contributed to Cignal's fourth consecutive win but also elevated them to fifth place with a commendable 5-2 win-loss record.
Reflecting on the significance of the victory, the rookie, a product of Ateneo, stated, “I’m very happy that we got the win. It was a very crucial game for us to go up the ranks, and yeah, I’m just really grateful.”
Despite feeling the effects of the flu in her lungs during the game, Gandler remained undeterred. She acknowledged the need for rest, especially with another significant match looming on Wednesday.
Gandler attributed her success to the unwavering support of her teammates and coaches. “I really would not have done it without my team, of course. I can really feel their support. It really gives me the confidence to just play, and of course, the coaches. Three blocks for me is just really a big thing, so I’m really happy with that,” she expressed.
Cignal head coach Shaq delos Santos praised Gandler's character, labeling her a true "fighter" for pushing through her illness to contribute to the team's success. Delos Santos shared insights into Gandler's commitment, highlighting her dedication and work ethic.
“Actually, we give everyone their roles in their positions, and I'm very happy, of course, because Vanie was sick last Thursday; she never trained,” said delos Santos. “But, as I said, because we know how diligent she is, how much she has invested, I really thought she needed rest, full rest. And when she came back yesterday, she was okay, and her game today was amazing. She's truly a fighter; even before this game started, I said she's really a fighter.”
