Wearing Janisa Johnson's number, Brooke Van Sickle vows to honor her legacy

As the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference kicked off, Brooke Van Sickle took to the court wearing the jersey number once worn by the late Janisa Johnson.

Though Van Sickle never had the chance to meet Johnson personally, she has embraced the responsibility of honoring Johnson’s memory by helping Petro Gazz retain their coveted title.

Johnson, known for her remarkable partnership with Wilma Salas in leading the Angels to the 2019 Reinforced Conference crown, left an indelible mark on the team.

Van Sickle, who has heard nothing but praise for Johnson, expressed her reverence, saying, “I personally wasn’t able to meet her, but everything I’ve heard about her has been wonderful. Everyone has so much love for her.”

Van Sickle's desire to honor Johnson’s legacy is evident in her performance and commitment.

“I wished I could have been able to watch her play and play with her, but I’m happy to be wearing the same number and hopefully continue to play well and get that win for her,” she added.

The tribute to Johnson extends beyond Van Sickle’s jersey number.

The Angels have incorporated a touching homage on their uniforms, featuring an angel wing wrapped around Johnson's No. 10 on the top left of their jerseys.

This gesture is a visual reminder of Johnson’s impact and the bond she shared with the team.

Adding a personal connection to the tribute, Malina Terrell, Johnson's best friend, visited Petro Gazz last month during her stay in the country for the Let’s Keep The Ball Flying outreach program.

Van Sickle noted, “I felt like it was very right for the team to pay tribute to Janisa. Meeting her best friend and having her be part of our practice was special. The friend was amazing, so I’m sure Janisa was too.”

Petro Gazz began their title defense with a commanding performance, securing a straight-set victory over ZUS Coffee, 25-16, 25-21, 25-21, at the Philsports Arena.

Van Sickle led the charge with a stellar showing, amassing 22 points through 18 attacks, three aces, and one block, while also contributing 11 excellent digs and six excellent receptions.

Her all-around play demonstrated her commitment to the team’s goals and to honoring Johnson's legacy.
