For Wilma Salas, Petro Gazz has always been more than just a team; it’s a place where bonds were forged that transcended volleyball.
Back in 2019, alongside American outside spiker Janisa Johnson, Salas formed a dynamic duo that propelled the young Angels to their historic first championship in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference. Standing tall at 6-foot-2, the Cuban opposite spiker not only excelled on the court but also developed deep connections off it, especially with Johnson.
To Salas, Petro Gazz wasn’t just a professional commitment; it was home. Johnson wasn’t merely a teammate; she was a sister.
Now, five years later, the 33-year-old veteran has returned to Petro Gazz for the 2024 PVL Reinforced Conference. Her comeback is marked not only by her formidable skills on the court but also by her dedication to honoring Johnson’s memory, who tragically passed away last May after battling colon cancer.
“For sure, it’s a sad feeling because Janisa is no longer with us in this life. I came back to this conference for Janisa. So every point, every game, we play with Janisa in our hearts,” Salas shared, reflecting on her deep-seated motivations.
In her first game back with Petro Gazz, Salas showcased her prowess, contributing 15 points and demonstrating her defensive prowess with 12 excellent receptions. Her performance was instrumental as the defending champions secured a commanding straight-set victory over ZUS Coffee on Thursday at the Philsports Arena.
The match wasn’t just about winning; it was about honoring Johnson’s legacy. Petro Gazz paid tribute to their fallen teammate by incorporating an angel wing wrapped around Johnson’s No. 10 on their jerseys, symbolizing her enduring presence and influence on the team.
“I feel joyous to return to the Philippines. Every time I say Petro Gazz is like my home, my family, so I'm very excited about this conference,” Salas expressed with a mix of nostalgia and determination.
“Despite having only four days with the team for training, I’m confident that I’ll continue to improve every day, both in practice and in every game.”
