Keeping calm under pressure, Phontham leads EST Cola's upset

Papatchaya Phontham is only 20, but when the pressure mounted against Creamline, she played like someone who had been in those moments countless times before.

The young Thai opposite spiker delivered when EST Cola needed her most, powering the Southeast Asian side past the heavily favored Cool Smashers, 17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 27-25, in the 2026 Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference on Friday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

Phontham was the centerpiece of the upset, repeatedly finding ways to score against Creamline before helping EST Cola withstand a furious fourth-set rally.

She ended the night with 27 points, highlighted by 24 successful attacks, two blocks, and an ace. She also contributed 12 excellent digs, showing that her impact went well beyond her scoring.

But perhaps her most impressive contribution was her composure.

EST Cola had established a commanding 16-8 advantage in the fourth set, only for Creamline to claw its way back into contention. With the Cool Smashers closing in, Phontham and the Thais refused to panic.

“Personally, I don’t feel nervous or anything. I just feel like we play it point by point and stay in the game. It’s not really that the crowd noise pressures us, but the cheering does have an effect,” said the 5-foot-9 Phontham, who was part of Thailand’s VNL squad this year.

The comeback attempt tested EST Cola's resolve, but the young squad managed to settle itself before closing out the match.

“We try to keep control of the team more. From when the score was far apart until they came back and put pressure on us, it made our team feel the pressure too. But we just tried to stay okay, keep calm, calm the team down."

That calmness was crucial.

Creamline entered the match as one of the tournament's favorites, but EST Cola turned the contest into a showcase of Thailand's next generation.

Nannaphat Moonjakham backed Phontham with 16 points and 15 excellent receptions, while Nirarach Srikuta added 12 points and 15 receptions.

More striking, however, is just how young this Thai group is.

EST Cola's roster averages only 20 years old. Its two setters, Natnicha Saelao and Serah Ankomah, are both just 17.

Yet the lack of experience on paper has not translated into a lack of confidence on the court.

That is hardly a coincidence.

Thailand has spent years building a volleyball system capable of introducing talented players to the senior level at an early age. Phontham's inclusion in this year's VNL team is another example of that pathway, giving young players exposure to elite international competition long before they reach their athletic prime.

The results are becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

Thailand recently achieved a breakthrough by qualifying for the Olympics for the first time after winning the 2026 Asian Women's Volleyball Championship.

EST Cola's performance against Creamline may not carry the same historical weight, but it offered another glimpse into the depth behind that national-team success.

And with the PVL Invitational preliminary round entering its final day, the young Thais now have a chance to turn Friday's statement into something bigger.

EST Cola, now 3-1, faces 1-3 Ho Chi Minh City at 4 p.m. on Sunday. Creamline, also 3-1, takes on PLDT at 6:30 p.m., while Farm Fresh and Nxled meet at 1 p.m.
