In the wake of a challenging debut season marked by a disheartening 1-10 record, coach Roger Gorayeb faced intense scrutiny as he endeavored to turn Capital1’s fortunes around in the 2024 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference.
Determined to reshape the team’s destiny, Gorayeb made a daring decision that would ultimately become a turning point for the Solar Spikers.
One of the most controversial moves was the selection of young outside spiker Marina Tushova as their import.
Despite facing criticism from various quarters, Gorayeb stood by his choice, and his faith in Tushova has proven to be a masterstroke.
The 25-year-old Russian’s historic performances have significantly boosted Capital1’s campaign, propelling them to a commendable 4-2 record and bringing them tantalizingly close to securing a playoff spot.
“Noong una, syempre maraming ‘huwag ‘yan, choose another one’ but I have to stick to my gut feeling and instinct as a volleyball coach. I’ll stick to her no matter what,” Gorayeb said after Capital1’s dramatic 20-25, 20-25, 25-16, 25-19, 15-6 reverse sweep of Nxled on Saturday night.
His unwavering confidence in Tushova’s abilities has been rewarded as she continues to break records and lead her team.
“Marina has proven a lot [of people] na I made the right choice… I would rather see Marina playing on our side than playing against her,” Gorayeb added.
Beyond her offensive prowess, Gorayeb praised Tushova for her professionalism and her role as a mentor to Capital1’s young talents.
The team’s future stars, including Roma Mae Doromal, Leila Cruz, and Gillianna Torres, have benefited from Tushova’s experience and high-intensity play.
Her influence extends to younger players like Shola Alvarez, Janeca Lana, and Iris Tonelada, who have looked up to her as a role model.
“Playing this way, marami siyang naisshare and nagguide doon sa mga player natin na local. They see her as a high-intensity player,” Gorayeb noted.
Tushova’s eagerness to play in the Philippines has not only elevated Capital1’s performance but also enhanced her own professional prospects.
Thanks to the global reach of volleyball scouting, Tushova is already fielding offers from other countries, a testament to her remarkable stint in the Philippines.
“Nasca-scout na rin siya so then there will be offers for her. Hindi naman natatapos dito [sa Pilipinas] ang volleyball career niya, she has another country in the future,” Gorayeb added.
