In a groundbreaking moment for the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), Thea Gagate stepped into the spotlight as the league's inaugural No. 1 draft pick, chosen by ZUS Coffee.
The former La Salle standout, known for her formidable skills as a two-time UAAP best middle blocker and key player for Alas Pilipinas, now looks to extend her winning legacy to her new team.
Amidst the buzz of the PVL Rookie Draft at Novotel Manila Araneta City, Gagate expressed eagerness about the prospect of teaming up with top talents from the NCAA, particularly from the championship-winning College of St. Benilde squad.
“Mas maganda lang itong experience and hopefully makabuo kami [ng mga CSB players] ng magandang synergy all together in my team," she remarked, emphasizing the blend of UAAP and NCAA stars now united under the Thunderbelles.
Joining Gagate are notable CSB players like Jade Gentapa, Mich Gamit, Gayle Pascual, and NCAA MVP Cloanne Mondoñedo, forming a promising roster alongside Strong Group holdovers Mary Onofre and Dolly Versoza.
“Very exciting siya isipin kasi we’ve never been together with the NCAA players and sila rin, hindi pa nakasama ang mga UAAP players," Gagate shared, acknowledging the unique dynamics of their team composition.
Despite the pressure of being the consensus top pick and the expectations that come with it, Gagate is focused on making an immediate impact for the Thunderbelles.
Reflecting on ZUS Coffee's previous winless season, she stressed the importance of building strong relationships within the team and management to elevate their performance in the upcoming PVL conference.
“I need to make a great relationship with my teammates, coaches, and management para okay yung environment and para maging okay yung laro namin in the upcoming PVL conference,” Gagate affirmed.
“Gagawin ko lang din yung best ko na sana matulungan ko yung team na umangat sa PVL and I hope I can also contribute in terms of blocking.”
Looking ahead, Gagate disclosed that her debut with the Thunderbelles will be postponed as she gears up exclusively for Alas Pilipinas' campaign in the Southeast Asian V.League this August.
Her dedication to both national and club duties underscores her commitment to raising the bar in Philippine volleyball, ensuring her impact resonates on multiple fronts.
