Petro Gazz halts F2 Logistics, bolsters semis drive

Petro Gazz showed it packs enough to power to overwhelm an F2 Logistics side bannered by its former top gun, squeezing out a 25-23, 25-13, 25-23 victory to tighten up the semifinal race in the Premier Volleyball League All Filipino Conference at the Philsports Arena in Pasig on Thursday.

Grethcel Soltones capped the big night for the league veterans, delivering back-to-back key hits to shove the Angels from a 22-23 deficit to match point before MJ Phillips scored on a kill block off Elaine Kasilag’s attack to help anchor the team’s one-hour and 31-minute victory.

Petro Gazz thus bounced back from a tough five-set loss to PLDT last Feb. 23 to tie idle Chery Tiggo at fourth at 3-2 while dealing F2 Logistics its second loss against four wins.

After a come-from-behind win in the first frame and a romp in the next, the Angels played catch-up majority of the third but forced a tie at 17 and kept the pressure on the Cargo Movers, who however regained the lead at 23-22 on a Kim Fajardo ace.

Suing for time, Petro Gazz Oliver Almadro told his wards: “You have the heart and the hustle. But you must believe.”

And believe they did as Soltones stepped up and tied the count with a clever hit despite an over-set and the former San Sebastian hitter blasted in a through-the-block hit through two defenders.

The Cargo Movers almost fumbled on their receive in the ensuing play but were able to set up Kasilag for an attack, which however rammed through the solid defense of Phillips, who went on to gain the game’s top honors with 13 points, including two blocks and two aces.

Jonah Sabete also fired 13 points while Aiza Pontillas and Soltones finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Angels, who will face the Army Lady Troopers and the Akari Chargers in their next two games.

Myla Pablo showed up her former team in the early going, hammering a kill to give F2 Logistics a 20-16 cushion. But the Angels scored seven of the next 10 points to force a tie at 23 and 2021 Open Conference runners-up snatched the set on a Kim Fajardo service error and a Remy Palma block on Pablo.

The former National U stalwart, however, finished with just six points as coach Regine Diego sat her out in the third frame.

Kim Dy banged in 14 points for the Cargo Movers, who could only draw a couple of six-point outputs more from Aby Marano and Kasilag.
